Job description

Position Summary

This placement will support the Marine Ecology program at the National Park of American Samoa. They will perform a variety of tasks, including coral restoration, public outreach and education, marine survey work, and much more.

Schedule

June 22, 2026 - October 21, 2026

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Marine survey work on fishes, corals, invertebrates, and algae. Initially snorkeling, but it could be expanded to include scuba diving once the intern gets certified. May also involve travel to the outer islands.

Boat deckhand

Boat and equipment maintenance. They will be under the supervision of our chief boat mechanic.

Marine and freshwater sampling. Involves hiking and wading into mountain streams

Assist with coral restoration project by participating in monitoring surveys.

Weather station maintenance and data interpretation. Involves hiking to remote locations

Computer data entry

Community outreach focusing on marine debris. Organize beach cleanups with local villages. Assist with marine debris display in visitor center.

Marginal Duties

Assist with education program. Participate in school visits.

Required Qualifications

Driver's license

This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.
