What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Weather Station position, and why are they important?

To thrive at a weather station, you need strong observational skills, a background in meteorology or environmental science, and an understanding of data collection methods. Familiarity with weather monitoring instruments, remote sensing equipment, and software for data logging and analysis is essential; relevant certifications such as the Certified Weather Observer (CWO) can be advantageous. Attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are important soft skills for accurate data reporting and collaborating with other meteorological professionals. These competencies ensure reliable weather information is gathered and shared, which is critical for forecasting and informing public safety decisions.

What does a typical workday look like at a weather station?

A typical workday at a weather station involves regularly monitoring and recording atmospheric conditions, maintaining equipment such as weather sensors and gauges, and interpreting data for reports. You may spend part of your time outdoors, checking instruments or conducting manual observations, and the rest indoors, analyzing data and collaborating with meteorologists or other technicians. Shift work, including nights, weekends, or holidays, may be required to ensure continuous monitoring. Team members often coordinate closely to ensure data accuracy and may also respond promptly to unusual weather events or equipment malfunctions. This dynamic environment keeps the role varied and impactful for weather forecasting and research.

What is a Weather Station job?

A Weather Station job involves monitoring, recording, and analyzing weather conditions using specialized instruments. Workers in these roles may collect data on temperature, humidity, wind speed, and atmospheric pressure to help meteorologists create forecasts. Jobs can range from field technicians maintaining equipment to analysts interpreting weather patterns. Job description

POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, Mechanical Engineering, will work under the direction of Prof. Sherrie Wang to develop deep learning methods for hyper-local weather forecasting with uncertainty quantification. The position is supported by a NASA-funded project focused on probabilistic downscaling of global weather models using satellite remote sensing, generative AI models, and conformal prediction. The research integrates numerical weather prediction (NWP) outputs, weather station observations, and satellite data to generate accurate, uncertainty-aware local forecasts for applications in disaster response and energy systems. Will develop and implement machine learning models for local weather forecasting and uncertainty quantification, including probabilistic and generative approaches; integrate and analyze heterogeneous datasets, including numerical weather prediction outputs, weather station observations, and satellite remote sensing data; design and run experiments to evaluate model performance and generalization across locations and conditions; contribute to the preparation of manuscripts, technical reports, and presentations for scientific and sponsor-facing dissemination; collaborate with project team members and external partners to align research with application needs in energy and disaster response; mentor graduate and undergraduate students and contribute to a collaborative research environment; and participate in project meetings and related research activities as needed.
