How does a Waterfall Project Manager typically coordinate with cross-functional teams during each project phase?

A Waterfall Project Manager works closely with cross-functional teams by establishing clear project requirements and timelines at the outset, then guiding each team through sequential phases such as planning, design, development, testing, and deployment. Communication is structured and usually follows a top-down approach, with regular status meetings and milestone check-ins to ensure alignment across departments. Collaboration is essential, especially when handoffs occur between phases, as any delays or miscommunications can impact the project's overall timeline. Maintaining thorough documentation and clear channels for feedback helps the Project Manager keep all stakeholders informed and engaged throughout the process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Waterfall Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Waterfall Project Manager, you need expertise in traditional project management methodologies, strong organizational skills, and typically a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field. Familiarity with project management software like Microsoft Project and certifications such as PMP or PRINCE2 are often required. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities help manage teams and ensure stakeholder alignment. These skills ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and according to predefined requirements, which is critical in Waterfall environments.

Industry UsageConstruction, manufacturing, traditional ITSoftware development, tech startups
Project ApproachPlan-driven, detailed upfrontAdaptive, incremental delivery

The Waterfall Project Manager typically oversees projects with a linear, sequential approach, suitable for industries like construction or manufacturing. In contrast, the Agile Project Manager manages flexible, iterative projects common in software development. Both roles require similar certifications and focus on effective project delivery, but their methodologies and work environments differ significantly.

What are Waterfall Project Managers?

Waterfall Project Managers are professionals who oversee projects using the Waterfall methodology, a linear and sequential approach to project management. They are responsible for defining project scope, creating detailed schedules, allocating resources, and ensuring each project phase is completed before the next begins. Waterfall Project Managers closely monitor progress, manage risks, and ensure deliverables meet predefined requirements. Their structured approach is often used in industries where requirements are clear and unlikely to change, such as construction or manufacturing.

Job Description

Please do not apply if you do not have Infor Cloudsuite ERP implementation experience.

We are seeking a highly skilled Technical Project Manager (TPM) to join our Infor ERP implementation services team. • Direct data strategy

  • Act as the primary liaison between client IT directors, internal developers, functional consultants, and third-party software vendors
  • Define project scope, create detailed technical work breakdown structures (WBS), and map out dependencies and resource allocation
  • Collaborate with PM\'s and Program Managers on project schedule and budget execution
  • Proactively identify technical risks, design flaws, or performance bottlenecks, developing mitigation plans before they impact timelines
  • Support client training, adoption and post-go-live transition as required
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related technical discipline
  • Minimum of 5+ years of direct experience managing multiple mid-to-large-scale Infor Cloudsuite implementations on the service provider/consulting side
  • Prior professional experience as a software engineer, database administrator, or systems analyst is heavily preferred
