What is warehousing?

Warehousing refers to the process of storing goods, products, or materials in a warehouse before they are distributed, sold, or used. Warehousing involves the management of inventory, organization of storage space, and handling of incoming and outgoing shipments. It plays a crucial role in supply chain management by ensuring that products are safely stored and readily available when needed. Warehousing operations can include tasks such as receiving goods, packing, picking, and shipping.

What are warehousing jobs?

Warehousing jobs encompass a number of jobs related to operating and working in a warehouse. Positions include receiving clerks, shipping managers, logistics specialists, processing supervisors and managers, and transportation workers. All of these positions ensure that the shipping and receiving of goods happens safely and efficiently. Many warehouse workers perform several different roles at once, such as performing inventory checks and moving boxes from one part of the warehouse to another. You may also be responsible for loading products and transporting them to customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in warehousing?

To thrive in Warehousing, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and basic math abilities, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with warehouse management systems (WMS), barcode scanners, and inventory tracking software is typically required. Reliability, teamwork, and effective communication are valuable soft skills that set employees apart in this field. These skills and qualities ensure efficient operations, accurate inventory control, and a safe work environment.

What are some common challenges faced in warehousing roles, and how can they be addressed?

In warehousing roles, common challenges include managing high volumes of inventory, maintaining accurate stock records, and ensuring timely order fulfillment. These challenges can be addressed by adopting efficient inventory management systems, regularly training staff on best practices, and fostering strong communication within the team. Additionally, staying organized and adhering to safety protocols help prevent errors and create a productive work environment.

Job description

Description:

Shipping & Warehousing

Hansen & Company Woodworks · St. Joseph, MN · Full-Time

The Opportunity

This is the seat that makes sure every unit leaves the building complete. As part of Shipping & Warehousing at HCo, you check orders against drawings and packing lists, build complete kits for every unit, and load semis so nothing arrives at the jobsite short or wrong. This role demands a sharp eye for detail — you're the last check before a job leaves the building, and getting it right the first time is the whole job.

HCo is a custom cabinet and architectural millwork manufacturer building the future of American manufacturing — our standard is simple: More than they Expect. This is a real seat at that table.

What You'll Do

  • Check drawings against packing lists and orders to confirm it's accurate prior to shipping.
  • Create a complete kit for every unit shipped from this facility — exactly what's needed, nothing missing, nothing extra.
  • Inspect every unit before shipping to guarantee it meets HCo's quality standard.
  • Drive a forklift to load and fill semis for outgoing shipments.

What You Bring

  • Highly detail oriented & able to handle many tasks at once.
  • Previous shipping, warehouse, logistics, or manufacturing experience.
  • Experience INNERGY experience preferred.
  • Ability to read shipping schedules, packing lists, labels, and inventory records.
  • Knowledge of safe loading, product protection, and load-securing practices.
  • Forklift certified.

Essential Functions — Physical & On-Site Requirements

This is a hands-on floor role. The following are fundamental to performing the job — not general fitness standards. If you have questions about your ability to meet any of these, reach out; we're glad to talk it through.

  • Stand, walk, bend, reach, and crouch continuously across the warehouse and shipping floor for full shift durations.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 lbs — cabinets, parts, hardware, and packaging materials — and team-lift larger or bulkier items.
  • Operate a forklift and other material-handling equipment safely, following facility safety protocols.
  • Load and secure product inside trailers, requiring climbing, bending, and reaching in tight spaces.
  • Work safely around active loading docks, moving trailers, and warehouse equipment.
  • Be physically present on-site for all scheduled shifts — this work cannot be performed remotely.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in cabinet, millwork, or custom manufacturing shipping environments.
  • Prior experience picking, packing, or kitting in a manufacturing or warehouse environment.
  • Experience reading shop drawings or technical packing documentation.

Starting pay $27–$32 hourly, based on experience. The standard schedule is a four-day work week (Monday–Thursday, 10-hour shifts), though overtime — including occasional Friday shifts — may be required based on production needs. This is paired with a full benefits package: medical, dental, and vision; life insurance and short-term disability; 401(k) with company match; Health Savings Account (HSA) with company contribution; and paid vacation and holidays. Real advancement opportunity as HCo grows.
