Job description

The Director, Electric Utilities will report to the Vice President, Electric Utilities as part of a new strategic Energy team that will be responsible for developing and executing on near-term and long-term strategies to help the corporate Development team integrate data center projects.

The Director will be responsible for managing and reviewing consultant studies, supporting the development team related to transmission needs and managing relationships with various external stakeholders. The Director will also support new corporate priorities and initiatives such as internal process improvements, exploring new markets, support energy procurement efforts, and support any regulatory/policy advocacy with external stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will have experience with transmission planning, transmission solution development, the ability to translate and communicate technical issues to non-technical team members, and a strong ability to identify issues and provide problem solving strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the quality and timeliness of all work products in assigned areas
  • Support review and vetting of potential datacenter sites to assess viability of power delivery timeframes from the utility
  • Manage the load-interconnection process and serve as a primary point of contact with the utility for the data center projects
  • Document the utility’s load interconnection process as it relates to any financial commitments, cost responsibilities, duration of the various steps of the process, and understand when power commitments are secured during the process
  • Support reviews of any utility contracts related to the project
  • Develop an understanding of the planning practices of the utilities and ISO/RTO in assigned geographical regions, which may include reviewing planning processes, modeling assumptions, understanding cost recovery and cost-allocation principles, and load interconnection processes
  • Support relationship management with the utilities and RTO/ISOs to support project-specific efforts including initial site due diligence, review of initial interconnection requests and subsequent studies, identify potential alternative transmission solutions where there are transmission constraints and communicate/support the corporate Development team in discussions with the utilities regarding projects
  • Identify and develop new near-term and long-term strategies in conjunction with the Vice President, Electric Utilities to continually improve internal processes (e.g. workflows, communications, deliverables)
  • Collaborate with Energy and Policy teams to work with external stakeholders to create new processes or improve existing processes to support data center integration (e.g. planning process improvements, load interconnection queue reform)
  • Manage budget related to transmission consultant activities
  • Prepare presentations, track market activity, and provide weekly and biweekly reports
  • Collaborate with other business units supporting the corporate Development team as necessary, including preconstruction, supply chain, design and engineering, sales, legal, and tax
  • Aid in the preparation of business cases and recommendations for leadership approval

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science, Engineering, BSEE, Power Systems preferred
  • 10+ years of electric utility power transmission or energy experience with 5+ years focused on power flow modeling, production cost modeling, transmission planning, and generator or load interconnection queue management
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office product suite
  • Strong analytical, detail-oriented, creative thinking, and communication skills
  • Comfortable creating processes and implementing strategies and procedures that serve an organization.
  • Ability to execute, process, and prioritize tasks with minimal-to-no supervision.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and collaborate with internal staff, external consultants, vendors, and other stakeholders.
