Position Overview

Hall Engineering Group is seeking an accomplished Director of Mechanical Engineering to lead, develop, and expand its Mechanical/HVAC engineering discipline across Florida.

This is an opportunity for a licensed mechanical engineer who combines strong technical expertise with team leadership, project management, client development, and operational oversight. The Director will guide the design and delivery of complex HVAC and mechanical systems while mentoring engineers, strengthening technical standards, and helping expand the firm's presence throughout Florida.

This position extends beyond traditional technical oversight. The Director will serve as a key partner to company leadership, helping shape the growth of the mechanical discipline, develop client relationships, support business development, and ensure successful project delivery across multiple markets.

Joining Hall Engineering Group means becoming part of an agile, highly collaborative, “right-sized” organization that offers the technical resources and multidisciplinary capabilities of a larger firm without unnecessary corporate bureaucracy. Engineers are empowered to act as designers, project managers, technical advisors, and owner's representatives while maintaining direct access to company leadership.

Core Responsibilities

  • Mechanical Discipline Leadership: Lead, mentor, and expand Hall Engineering Group's Mechanical/HVAC engineering team while fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, technical excellence, and professional development.

  • Project Delivery: Oversee the planning, design, coordination, and execution of complex HVAC and mechanical systems across healthcare, aviation, transportation, industrial, commercial, civic, educational, maritime, and entertainment projects.

  • Technical Oversight: Establish and maintain high-quality mechanical design standards while ensuring compliance with ASHRAE, SMACNA, NFPA, Florida Building Code, energy codes, and other applicable regulations.

  • Quality Assurance: Review calculations, technical specifications, design documents, equipment selections, construction documents, and deliverables for accuracy, constructability, efficiency, and code compliance.

  • Multidisciplinary Coordination: Collaborate with electrical, lighting, commissioning, structural, architectural, and other project disciplines to deliver coordinated and efficient building-system solutions.

  • Team Development: Recruit, mentor, and develop mechanical engineers and designers while establishing clear expectations, career-development pathways, and succession plans for the discipline.

  • Technology and Innovation: Champion the use of Revit, BIM, energy modeling, digital collaboration platforms, and advanced mechanical design tools to improve project quality and delivery efficiency.

  • Client Management: Develop and maintain strong relationships with owners, architects, contractors, consultants, and institutional clients while serving as a trusted technical advisor.

  • Business Development: Support proposal development, project interviews, presentations, fee negotiations, client pursuit strategies, and efforts to expand the firm's mechanical engineering portfolio.

  • Operational Oversight: Manage staffing, workload distribution, utilization, project budgets, schedules, resource planning, and financial performance within the mechanical discipline.

  • Strategic Growth: Collaborate with company leadership on annual planning, market expansion, talent acquisition, organizational development, and the long-term growth of the mechanical practice.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.

  • Licensure: Active Professional Engineer license in Florida or the ability to obtain Florida licensure through reciprocity.

  • Experience: At least 10 years of progressive Mechanical/HVAC design engineering experience within an engineering consulting environment.

  • Leadership: Demonstrated experience leading engineers and designers, managing project teams, and overseeing multiple concurrent assignments.

  • Project Management: Proven ability to manage mechanical projects from initial concept and programming through construction administration and project closeout.

  • Technical Expertise: Advanced knowledge of HVAC and mechanical building systems, including chilled-water systems, Variable Refrigerant Flow systems, Variable Air Volume systems, central energy plants, controls, ventilation, and humidity management.

  • Software Proficiency: Strong proficiency with Revit, BIM workflows, digital collaboration tools, energy modeling software, and other mechanical design applications.

  • Communication: Excellent written, verbal, presentation, client-management, and interdisciplinary coordination skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Practice Leadership: Previous experience leading, developing, or expanding a mechanical engineering department, studio, or regional practice within an engineering consulting firm.

  • Florida Market Knowledge: Advanced understanding of Florida's climate-specific design challenges, including humidity control, ventilation, energy efficiency, storm resilience, and regional building requirements.

  • Market Experience: Experience delivering projects within one or more of Hall Engineering Group's primary markets, including healthcare, aviation, ports and maritime, civic, education, industrial, commercial, or entertainment.

  • Sustainability and Decarbonization: Experience with sustainable design strategies, energy conservation, building electrification, decarbonization, LEED, and high-performance building systems.

  • Business Development: Demonstrated success developing client relationships, securing new work, contributing to proposals, and expanding revenue within an engineering practice.

  • Financial Management: Experience overseeing project budgets, utilization, staffing forecasts, profitability, and operational performance.

What This Opportunity Offers

  • The opportunity to lead and shape the future of Hall Engineering Group's Mechanical Engineering discipline.

  • Direct access to company leadership and meaningful influence over technical, operational, and growth decisions.

  • A diverse project portfolio across several resilient and high-growth Florida markets.

  • A collaborative environment with the resources of a multidisciplinary firm and the agility of a smaller organization.

  • Flexible or hybrid work options based on project, client, and leadership responsibilities.

  • Competitive base compensation, performance incentives, comprehensive benefits, and long-term professional growth potential.
