Job description

Harlem Commonwealth Council (HCC) is seeking dedicated and enthusiastic volunteer Math Tutors to support middle school students through our Level Up Learning Lab, a Saturday morning academic enrichment program focused on strengthening math skills, building confidence, and promoting academic growth.

This is a meaningful opportunity to make a direct impact on low-performing students in Harlem while supporting their academic success in a supportive, community-centered environment.

Program Details

  • Schedule: Weekly, Saturdays, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
  • Dates: February through June
  • Student Population: Middle school students (grades 6–8)
  • Location: Harlem: 361 West 125th Street New York, NY 10027
  • Commitment: Consistent weekly participation strongly preferred

HCC follows all DOH and DOE background check requirements. All volunteers are required to complete a full background check prior to participation.

Tutor Responsibilities

  • Provide engaging small-group or one-on-one math support
  • Reinforce core math concepts including fractions, decimals, ratios, and pre-algebra
  • Assist students with problem-solving and homework support as needed
  • Encourage positive learning habits and academic confidence
  • Serve as a supportive role model for students

Preferred Qualifications

  • College students, educators, professionals, or community members
  • Comfortable with middle school–level math
  • Reliable, patient, and encouraging
  • Prior tutoring or youth experience is a plus, but not required
