Job description

In order to ensure the perpetuation of the prestige and reputation of the Shipshewana Fire Department, each applicant must meet the minimum qualification requirements and successfully complete each step of the selection process to be considered for employment.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:


1. Application must be a U. S. citizen or authorized to be employed in the U.S.

2. Applicant must be a minimum of 18 years of age.

3. Applicant must possess a valid driver's license of state issued ID.

4. Applicant must be able to attend monthly meetings.

5. Applicant must be able to attend monthly trainings.

6. Applicant must be able to obtain all State and Federal training requirements.

7. Applicant must be willing to respond to emergency calls when able.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Upon appointment as a firefighter of the Shipshewana Fire Department the member must:


1. Reside or work inside the response area of the Shipshewana Fire Department.

2. Have Adequate means of transportation to the Shipshewana Fire Department.

3. Maintain in his/her telephone service which will allow for communication with the fire department.

4. Successfully complete a one-year probationary period to receive permanent appointment to the department.


SELECTION PROCESS:

Provided the applicant has met the minimum qualification requirement s upon review of the completed application, following are the next stages in the selection process. The successful completion of each stage is necessary to proceed in the selection process.


1. Character Investigation - Because of the highly sensitive nature of this occupation, applicants may be rejected if the character investigation reveals any of the following:

a. current drug use or any drug dealing,

b. current alcohol use that would impair job performance,

c. convicted of a felony,

d. acts of dishonesty or theft,

e. employment history indicating tardiness or excessive absenteeism,

f. the inability to follow orders from supervisors or deal with co-workers or the public.

2. Officer Interview - Candidate must complete an interview with all of the officers of the Shipshewana Fire Department.

3. Department voting - If the officers of the Shipshewana Fire Department feel that the candidate meets the requirements after their interview; it will be taken to the department for voting.

Any applicant who completes the selection process for a position as a firefighter and is unsuccessful in achieving hiring status shall not be excluded from consideration for any future vacancies in any subsequent processing period. The applicant, however, must submit a new application form and complete each step of the selection process during any subsequent processing periods.
