Reference List: IFSTA Essentials of Firefighting, 8th Edition, Firefighter 1 (All Chapters); IFSTA Essentials of Firefighting, 8th Edition, Firefighter 2 (All Chapters); IFSTA Fire and Emergency Services Instructor, 9th Edition (Chapters 1 - 13) Essential Functions CITY OF HENDERSON, KENTUCKY CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATION CLASSIFICATION TITLE: TRAINING CAPTAIN PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION The purpose of this classification is to supervise departmental training in the absence of the Division Chief of Training.
Supervise interns, co-ops, and students of the fire science pathway. Duties include, but are not limited to, assisting the Division Chief of Training in planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, evaluating all activities and programs of the department to provide continuous fire safety (including suppression and training) for the City, and ensuring compliance with policies and procedures. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The following duties are normal for this position.
These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Assists the Division Chief of Training in planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and evaluating departmental training activities and programs, ensuring that all required training is provided.
Analyze the challenges of firefighting and make recommendations to the Division Chief of Training for training programs and activities. Assists required training programs in the most advanced methods of firefighting, safety, and prevention activities. Serves as secondary instructor for the department; secures instructors from external organizations/agencies; assists chief officers and company officers with training activities.
Assists maintaining all training records; posts training schedules; ensures training is complete. Assists procuring and issuing training resources; ensures that all members of the department are aware of and fully understand training resources. Assists with developing rules, regulations, policies, and procedures, including standard operating procedures within the training division; develops training programs to assist departmental personnel in studying and understanding all rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Prepares, maintains, and submits all required records, reports, data, statistics, and information regarding training activities and programs; forward reports as required to the Division Chief of Training. Serves as an adjunct or provisional instructor and is responsible for instructing and coordinating all aspects of the Fire Science Pathway with Henderson County High School as long as the program exists. Ensures all members of the fire department comply with KY Fire Commission training incentive programs.
Assists in maintaining departmental ISO training compliance. Oversees daily operations of the fire science, co-op, and intern programs. Must successfully complete Physical Agility Test (PAT) annually in accordance with Henderson Fire Department SOP, Article 66, physical fitness.
Maintains regular and predictable in person attendance during regular business hours of the City of Henderson and Henderson County High School is required. Must undergo and successfully complete drug test and alcohol screening prior to employment and undergo and successfully complete future drug test and/or alcohol screening pursuant to the City's Drug and Alcohol policy. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS The following duties are ancillary for this position.

Performing fire and rescue operations. Ensuring maintenance and readiness of fire apparatus and related equipment. Ensuring compliance with rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or GED; supplemented by college level course work or vocational training in fire science or fire management preferred; supplemented by one (1) year of experience as a Fire Captain required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Must be a Kentucky Certified Career Firefighter.
Must be a FF 1&2. Must be a Kentucky certified Emergency Medical Technician. Must be a KY Fire Instructor 2, Fire Officer 1, NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700 & 800.
KY Fire Instructor 2, Fire Officer 1, ICS-300, and ICS-400 shall be obtained within 18 months of promotion/hire. Must possess all credentials to meet minimum qualifications for Kentucky Department of Education Adjunct of Provisional Instructor Status. PERFORMANCE APTITUDES Data Utilization: Requires the ability to evaluate, audit, deduce, and/or assess data using established criteria.

Human Interaction: Requires the ability to perform in a supervisory capacity over subordinate supervisors.
