Job description

Summary of Job Responsibilities

This position is an SME in VMware and is responsible for integrating, implementing, maintaining, testing, and monitoring system technology across the organization. Leads and supports the implementation of Infrastructure as Code using deep PowerShell scripting expertise and understanding of IaC. Manages and maintains domain controller administration, including upgrades, replication relationships, and disaster recovery. Mentors, coaches, and guides administrators to address complex technical matters that require proactive strategies and in-depth evaluation. Leads technical projects and delivers short- and long-term technological solutions. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Employees are held accountable for all duties of the job. Individuals must be able to perform these duties with or without reasonable accommodations.

  • Expert skill in multiple key systems in assigned domain including integrations, security, design, implementation, and vendor interaction are required 

  • Solid comprehension of multiple PERA systems, projects, project specifications, and business process logic 

  • Ability to field through Level 3 incidents from other staff, recognizing solutions using developed skills and research to resolve and document root cause solutions of new issues 

  • Expert level support of VMware infrastructure including vSphere, vCenter, and ESXi hypervisor management, vMotion and DRS, server builds, virtualized networking (Network I/O Control), integration of 3rd party fibre channel storage solutions, vSAN, and disaster recovery orchestration 

  • Implement, and mentor other staff in VMware performance management, and capacity planning; participate in disaster recovery orchestration initiatives, and lead disaster recovery testing of domain and server related systems, ensuring documentation is written, up to date, tested, and improved for system recovery and operation  

  • Identify and improve existing processes through automation and scripting using configuration management, Infrastructure as Code, and tools to reduce manual operations, improve quality and speed of delivery 

  • Plan, implement, and upgrade domain controllers and VMware systems, ensuring detailed quality documentation with critical review for completeness of change management processes 

  • Oversee and manage the domain infrastructure including vulnerability management, CIS hardening of domain controllers and Windows servers, domain controller patching and maintenance, integrations to support vulnerability reduction, Kerberos, and a subset of Group Policy managed by the infrastructure team 

  • Utilize multiple system skills to evaluate and review vendor SOW projects, participate in vendor discussions to resolve significant issues, regularly act as a resource for staff on existing applications or system operation involving the virtualized environment and domain, evaluate licensing, and review quotes for renewals and significant new services or tools 

  • Adept at making decisions and optimizing future work utilizing planning, testing, and proof of concepts 

  • Provides written communication that is concise, clear, and updated, on both small and medium initiatives and reviews ITSM processes to ensure continued change improvement  

  • Collaborates effectively with teammates and vendors with empathy, adeptly uses feedback and audience specific language to explain and resolve issues, and manage vendor relationships 

  • Provides technical and task leadership, coaching, training, and direction to develop team depth proactively on moderate to large-size projects with minimal supervision required from other staff and management 

  • Perform other duties as assigned 

Job Qualifications

  • Degree in technical (STEM) field and four years’ experience in technical role preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience 

  • Experience as an SME with in multiple key technologies/platforms within the assigned technology domain with a solid understanding of system security implications 

  • VMware Certifications a plus – Professional VCP-DCV, Advanced Professional VCAP-DCV Deploy or VCAP-DCV Design, Design Expert VCDX-DCV 

  • Periodically attends technical training relating to current and future system support duties 

  • Proven skill implementing VMware virtual environments built on HPE hardware (DL380 and Synergy blade server frames) utilizing HPE best practices supporting Windows and Linux virtual machines, virtual networking and vlan management, fibre channel storage integration, and Aria appliance monitoring tools with integration to ITSM alert management 

  • Solid skills in PowerShell scripting to integrate automation, including configuration management and IaC expertise, observability, monitoring, and alerting 

  • Demonstrated administrator of Microsoft domain controllers, including primary (PDC) and secondary (SDC) controllers and replication, management, CIS hardening, upgrades, Kerberos key distribution center (KDC) and associated user principals, certificate management, and disaster recovery
