What Is a Visual Designer?

A visual designer creates designs for clients. Their responsibilities include designing the visual aspects of advertisements, marketing campaigns, and products. Specific job duties vary depending on their employer or clients. For example, they may create product labels, layout print publications, or design web pages. They often meet with clients to determine their needs, collaborate with other graphic designers, create design plans, and submit sketches and project proposals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Visual Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Visual Designer, you need strong proficiency in graphic design principles, typography, color theory, and a portfolio demonstrating your creative work, often supported by a degree in design or a related field. Expertise in industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and familiarity with prototyping tools like Figma or Sketch are typically required. Exceptional communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills help Visual Designers work effectively with clients and cross-functional teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for creating compelling visuals that align with brand goals and ensure a seamless user experience.

Throughout a project, they participate in brainstorming sessions, provide visual concepts, and iterate on feedback from stakeholders to ensure the final design aligns with both user needs and business goals. Effective communication and adaptability are key, as Visual Designers often need to balance creative vision with technical or brand requirements. This collaborative environment helps ensure cohesive and impactful visual experiences across digital and print platforms.

  • Compensation: Competitive compensation.
  • Health Benefits: Visual Comfort covers the majority of employee medical premiums, and offers competitive vision and dental coverage available starting the first of the month following your start date.
  • Insurance: Company-provided life insurance and short-term disability coverage.
  • Retirement: 401(k) plan with company matching up to 4%, available beginning the first of the month following your hire date.

How success is defined:

  • Achieve and exceed individual and team sales goals using a consultative, client-first approach that puts design at the center of every conversation
  • Guide clients through our extensive portfolio with expert product knowledge, genuine enthusiasm, and an instinct for beautiful spaces
  • Manage the full client journey—from initial inquiry through order completion—ensuring a seamless, elevated experience at every touchpoint

Product Knowledge & Design Support

  • Develop deep expertise in the Visual Comfort portfolio—from iconic designer collaborations to architectural-grade solutions—and translate that knowledge into inspired client recommendations
  • Assist clients with product selection, specification, and documentation in support of residential and commercial projects
  • Respond to client inquiries with thorough, accurate guidance on proposed lighting solutions—turning technical specs into compelling design stories
  • Stay current on the latest advancements in luxury lighting, smart controls, and automated shading technology to position yourself—and our clients—at the forefront of design

Customer Experience Center Operations

  • Ensure the Customer Experience Center consistently reflects brand standards—immaculately presented, thoughtfully organized, and always ready to inspire
  • Develop proficiency in the company's order entry and client management systems, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in every transaction

What you will bring:

  • 2+ years of experience in a client-facing role in luxury retail, lighting, interior design, home furnishings, or a related field—a true love of the category matters most
  • Sales-driven mindset with a proven ability to build relationships, meet goals, and elevate every client interaction
  • Genuine passion for design, lighting, and delivering exceptional experiences that clients remember and return for
  • Strong visual and aesthetic sensibility—you notice light, appreciate craft, and understand why the right fixture changes everything
  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with CRM/ERP systems (D365 or JDE a plus)
  • Warm, polished communicator—effective by phone, email, and in person
  • Organized and detail-oriented, able to manage multiple client relationships simultaneously
