What is the difference between a graphic designer and a Visual Designer?

A Visual Designer is a role that focuses on creating the overall look and feel of digital products, including user interfaces, branding, and visual storytelling, often requiring skills in UI/UX design and tools like Adobe XD or Figma. A graphic designer typically works on static visual content such as print materials, logos, and marketing collateral. While both roles involve visual creativity, Visual Designers usually work more closely with digital experiences and user-centered design processes.

What is the highest paid designer job?

Senior roles such as Creative Director or Design Director typically have the highest salaries among visual designers, often exceeding six figures annually. These positions require extensive experience, leadership skills, and proficiency with advanced design tools and strategic planning.

How does a Visual Designer typically collaborate with other teams during a project?

Visual Designers frequently collaborate with cross-functional teams such as product managers, UX/UI designers, developers, and marketing specialists. Throughout a project, they participate in brainstorming sessions, provide visual concepts, and iterate on feedback from stakeholders to ensure the final design aligns with both user needs and business goals. Effective communication and adaptability are key, as Visual Designers often need to balance creative vision with technical or brand requirements. This collaborative environment helps ensure cohesive and impactful visual experiences across digital and print platforms.

What are Visual Designers?

Visual Designers are creative professionals who focus on the appearance and aesthetics of digital products, such as websites, mobile apps, and user interfaces. They use typography, color, imagery, and layout to create visually appealing and effective designs that enhance user experience. Visual Designers often collaborate with UX designers, developers, and other team members to ensure the final product is both beautiful and functional. Their work helps communicate a brand’s message and values through visual elements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Visual Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Visual Designer, you need strong proficiency in graphic design principles, typography, color theory, and a portfolio demonstrating your creative work, often supported by a degree in design or a related field. Expertise in industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and familiarity with prototyping tools like Figma or Sketch are typically required. Exceptional communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills help Visual Designers work effectively with clients and cross-functional teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for creating compelling visuals that align with brand goals and ensure a seamless user experience.

Is AI replacing designers?

AI tools are increasingly used by visual designers to automate repetitive tasks, generate ideas, and enhance creativity. However, AI currently serves as a complement rather than a replacement, as human creativity, critical thinking, and understanding of user experience remain essential in design work. Designers who adapt by learning new tools and skills can leverage AI to improve productivity and innovation.

What Is a Visual Designer?

A visual designer creates designs for clients. Their responsibilities include designing the visual aspects of advertisements, marketing campaigns, and products. Specific job duties vary depending on their employer or clients. For example, they may create product labels, layout print publications, or design web pages. They often meet with clients to determine their needs, collaborate with other graphic designers, create design plans, and submit sketches and project proposals.

At Borrowell, we're on a mission to help Canadians feel confident about their money. We empower individuals to take control of their financial futures by providing the tools and insights needed to understand, build, and use their credit effectively.

With over four million members, Borrowell empowers Canadians to understand their credit, build credit through Rent Advantage and Credit Builder, and make better financial product choices.

Our team is diverse, inclusive, and driven by a shared passion for making a meaningful difference in the lives of Canadians. We pride ourselves on fostering a culture of collaboration, humility, and innovation. If you're looking to join a company that's transforming the financial landscape and empowering Canadians to achieve their financial aspirations, we invite you to explore career opportunities at Borrowell. Together, we can help Canadians feel confident about money.

About the role:

Borrowell is looking for a Senior Visual Designer to elevate our brand and visual language across every channel, touchpoint, and product surface. Reporting to the Manager, Product Design, you will work collaboratively with our Product Design, Marketing, and Lifecycle teams to bring our brand to life across digital touchpoints and elevate our product experience and aesthetic.

You'll have the opportunity to take ownership of key projects, work closely with a cross-functional team, bring a strong perspective on crafting premium experiences, and serve as an independent advocate for design standards and craft.

Responsibilities:

  • Brand and visual standards
    • Establish visual quality and brand consistency across in-app UI, emails, marketing site, social media, and other campaigns: building the systems and standards that help everyone at Borrowell ship better design
    • Drive strong visual decision-making informed by brand guidelines, industry trends, and accessibility standards
    • Champion visual quality across teams, setting design authority and brand enforcement, communicating rationale behind design choices, participating in critiques, and elevating overall visual quality across the company
  • In-app and product visual design
    • Evolve and optimize foundational design standards, including our design system and component library, scaling up from the atomic level: tokens, typography, colour, and icons
    • Create reusable frameworks and scalable templates for promotion cards, dashboard placements, hero images, and other graphics
    • Support growth experiments, A/B tests, and feature launches with production-quality visual output
  • Marketing and communication design
    • Build and maintain a visual asset library for use in email templates, social graphics, landing page assets, illustrations, and mockups
    • Work in close collaboration with Lifecycle and Marketing teams across the creative cycle-from concept and iteration to production and iterative review
    • Implement & optimize email templates by establishing a modular content block system across lifecycle and promotional sends
    • Elevate our marketing website and landing pages with visual updates that are optimized for impact, collaborating with Engineering and Data teams to implement and track performance metrics

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in visual, brand, or graphic design, with strong brand and systems thinking
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating depth in visual design fundamentals, typography, colour theory, and layout
  • Expertise in Figma, with the ability to organize assets and specs for handoff
  • Experience building design systems and scalable design processes
  • Solid understanding of email design constraints and marketing asset production
  • Deep knowledge of web best practices and how design decisions around images, typography, and layout impact performance and overall user experience
  • Comfort working independently and owning a body of work end-to-end
  • Strong advocate for great design, with the ability to elevate quality standards while working within deadlines
  • Clear, constructive communicator, comfortable giving and receiving design feedback in a collaborative, fast-moving environment

Nice to Haves

  • Experience contributing to or leading a design refresh or rebrand at a consumer-facing company
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards and how to apply them across different surfaces
  • Skills in motion design, animating micro-interactions, or custom illustration
  • Experience in implementing visual assets and HTML/CSS in Braze

Benefits

  • The Opportunity - join and have a major impact at a growing company that is helping make financial stability possible for everybody
  • Comprehensive Health Benefits - medical, dental, vision, and paramedical health benefits for you and your family, with extra yearly coverage for psychotherapists and massage therapists
  • Additional Health Benefits - virtual benefit offering that allows you to connect 24/7 with nurses, doctors and mental health professionals
  • Maternity & Parental Leave Top-up - available to new parents
  • WFH Reimbursement - we ship you gear like a laptop, mouse, keyboard, and you can reimburse additional items to make your workplace better for you
  • Employee Development Benefit - annual reimbursements on payments to help your learning
  • Givewell Benefit - 1 paid volunteer day a year to give back to the community
  • Flexibility - flexible working hours and a flexible vacation policy

We are remote-first across Canada with an office in Toronto. This role will require you to attend in-person meetings and team-building events.

At Borrowell, one of our core values and firm beliefs is that diversity makes us better. If you're unsure about your qualifications for this position, we'd still encourage you to apply. We're looking for candidates who have experience, but know that not everyone's had a chance to demonstrate what they can do. What's most important is that you have a growth mindset and care about helping people with their finances - an area in their lives that causes a lot of stress.

Please note that due to the sensitive nature of the work we do, clearing a credit and criminal record check is a condition of employment.

Borrowell encourages applications from candidates with differing abilities. Please let us know if you require accommodation at any stage in the selection process.

This posting represents a current and active vacancy within our organization.

The budgeted annual salary range for this role is $100,000 - $150,000 CAD. Starting pay is determined by the candidate's relevant experience and skills. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible for Borrowell's full benefits package.
