Virtual tutors often encounter challenges such as maintaining student engagement, managing distractions, and building rapport remotely. To address these, tutors can use interactive digital tools, set clear expectations at the beginning of each session, and incorporate frequent check-ins to keep students focused. Establishing a consistent routine and using visual aids or gamified activities can also help create a more dynamic and effective learning environment. Building trust and open communication with students and parents is key to overcoming these challenges and ensuring student success.

Job description

About GO Tutor Corps

The mission of the GO Tutor Corps is to provide students with access to a quality education through high-dosage tutoring. After many years of providing in-person tutoring across the Northeastern US, GO launched a virtual tutoring program in 2025. As our virtual program continues to grow, we are hiring a staff member specifically dedicated to its success.

Virtual Tutoring Coordinator Role

We are seeking a mission-driven educator and program manager to coordinate the day-to-day operations of our Virtual Tutoring program between 7:30am and 3:30pm ET. The Virtual Tutoring Coordinator will manage key operational aspects of the program each day to help ensure that virtual instruction is high-quality, consistent, and aligned with GO's standards for high-dosage tutoring. The role includes a mix of operational work (scheduling, tutor coverage, roster management), communication with tutors and school leaders (Slack and email), and observing tutoring sessions.

Ideal candidates have strong logistical skills and K-12 instructional experience. This role is hands-on, fast-moving, and central to creating a strong experience for both students and tutors in our virtual learning environment. To be eligible for this role, you must already live in the Greater NYC area, including northern New Jersey.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the daily operational systems of the virtual tutoring program, including scheduling, attendance tracking, and coverage plans.
  • Generate reports from our virtual tutoring platform to help with data analysis and payroll processing.
  • Ensure seamless real-time adjustments to schedules based on tutor absences, school needs, or student roster changes.
  • Serve as the first line of communication for tutors and staff through Slack and other internal systems, including organizing and sending out weekly communication memos.

Instructional Support (30%)

  • Conduct virtual observations of tutors to monitor instructional quality and provide actionable feedback.
  • Refer tutors for more intensive coaching or improvement plans as needed.
  • Collect and share best practices with tutors and school partners.
  • Provide recommendations to refine curriculum materials and engagement strategies.
  • Partner with school staff and GO colleagues to ensure effective implementation at each partner site.

Team Member & Program Contributor (20%)

  • Participate in virtual and in-person programming to support the program team, including tutor training sessions, walkthrough days, and check-ins.
  • Attend team meetings, monthly in-person staff meetings, and additional meetings as needed.
  • Share updates, trends, and needs from the virtual tutoring program with the rest of the organization.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts to strengthen the virtual tutoring model across our network.

Qualifications & Competencies

Must Have:

  • 3+ years of relevant professional experience in education, including direct instructional experience either tutoring or teaching.
  • Strong logistical and operational management skills; ability to coordinate many moving pieces in real time.  Experience in school operations or in tutor management is a plus.
  • Prior experience using a rubric to conduct observations of tutors or teachers.
  • Superb organizational skills, attention to detail, reliability, and responsiveness.
  • Ability to build strong relationships and communicate effectively with tutors, school partners, and other GO staff members.
  • Comfort using technology platforms for communication, scheduling, and instructional support.
  • Awareness of and comfort with issues of diversity, specifically around race, class, sexuality, and gender; ability to engage in and facilitate conversations about equity and inclusion.
  • Ability to work from 7:30am-3:30pm, Monday-Friday.
  • Must live within commutable distance to New York City.

Nice to Have:

  • Previous experience with tutoring programs.
  • Experience supporting virtual instruction or blended-learning environments.
