What is a Virtual Supply Chain job?

A Virtual Supply Chain job involves managing supply chain operations remotely using digital tools, cloud-based platforms, and data analytics. Professionals in this role coordinate procurement, logistics, inventory management, and supplier communication without being physically present at warehouses or distribution centers. They leverage technologies like AI, blockchain, and IoT to optimize workflows, improve efficiency, and mitigate risks. This role is essential for modern businesses seeking agile, cost-effective, and resilient supply chain solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Virtual Supply Chain position, and why are they important?

To excel in a Virtual Supply Chain role, you need a solid understanding of logistics, inventory management, and data analysis, typically backed by a degree in supply chain management, business, or a related field. Familiarity with ERP systems like SAP or Oracle, supply chain management software, and certifications such as APICS Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) are common requirements. Overall, you will have interactions with most of Supply Chain as well as own the outcome of one of the most visible programs in the organization.
What you'll do
  • Manage Financial Reporting by analyzing key cost components of Material Cost of Sales (MCOS) such as purchase price variance and provide valuable insights into opportunities to save cost.
  • Partner with Corporate Finance and Supply Chain teams to support cross-functional activities tied to monthly and quarterly forecast cycles within the corporate planning calendar.
  • Independently own end-to-end cost data preparation and analysis and serve as the subject matter expert for savings calculations and projections.
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain, Finance, and Product Groups on various cost related projects to support business decisions.
  • Manage and support existing Supply Chain cost savings programs; explore and identify future opportunities.
  • Streamline decision making cycle time by reconfiguring and improving existing tools and processes.
  • Drive miscellaneous ad-hoc analysis of FinOps related data for executive communication and business insights.

Who we're looking for
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Supply Chain, Business Management, Operations, or a related field with 12 years of experience; or a Master's/MBA in a relevant field with 8 years of experience; or PhD with 5 years experience.
  • Experience in project and program management, with strong Microsoft Office skills and proficiency in SAP and other ERP systems.
  • Data-driven professional who turns complex data into clear, actionable insights.
  • Proficient in preparing, analyzing, and presenting data using Advanced Excel, Power BI, and basic SQL.
  • Strong presentation skills with the ability to communicate clearly and engage senior leaders and executive stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently, collaborate effectively as part of a team, and lead cross-functional teams when needed.
  • Proven ability to work effectively within a matrixed organization.
  • Ability to succeed successfully under pressure and time constraints.
  • Open-minded self-starter with the ability to adapt, improvise, and problem-solve.
  • Willingness to travel to support critical programs ~15% of time.
