AspectVirtual RnTelehealth Nurse

Work EnvironmentRemote, often from home, providing patient assessments and educationRemote, providing clinical advice and patient monitoring via telecommunication
Industry UsageHealthcare, telemedicine companies, hospitals

Both Virtual Rn and Telehealth Nurse roles require an RN license and involve remote patient care. Virtual Rns often focus on patient education and assessments, while Telehealth Nurses may provide clinical advice and monitor patient conditions remotely. The terms are frequently used interchangeably, but Virtual Rn emphasizes a broader scope of remote nursing services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Virtual RN, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual RN, you need a current RN license, strong clinical judgment, and experience in remote patient monitoring or telehealth settings. Familiarity with telemedicine platforms, electronic health records (EHRs), and secure communication tools is essential. Excellent communication, adaptability, and problem-solving abilities help build patient trust and ensure effective care delivery from a distance. These skills enable Virtual RNs to provide safe, high-quality care and maintain patient engagement in a digital healthcare environment.

How does a Virtual RN effectively collaborate with on-site healthcare teams to ensure continuity of patient care?

A Virtual RN works closely with on-site nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals by utilizing secure communication platforms, electronic health records, and scheduled video conferences. This collaboration ensures that patient assessments, care plans, and updates are effectively shared and coordinated. Virtual RNs often participate in interdisciplinary team meetings remotely and provide real-time support for patient triage, education, and clinical documentation. Strong communication skills and familiarity with telehealth technologies are vital to maintaining seamless care transitions and high-quality patient outcomes.

What Is the Job of a Virtual RN?

Telemedicine is a branch of telehealth, which allows virtual RNs to use electronic information and technology to treat patients. As a virtual RN, your responsibilities are to monitor and care for patients remotely as well as support nurses who are in actual facilities. You work from home or another remote location, using a computer, phone, and various software and programs to review medical records and assist with the assessment and treatment of a patient. Your duties are similar to those of a regular nurse, minus the physical interactions. A virtual nurse may also work in other areas of health care, including telephone triage, insurance claims, and health informatics.

What is a Virtual RN?

A Virtual RN, or Virtual Registered Nurse, is a licensed nurse who provides patient care and support remotely using digital communication tools such as video calls, phone calls, and secure messaging. Virtual RNs can perform tasks like patient assessments, care coordination, health education, and monitoring chronic conditions without being physically present. They often work in telehealth settings, supporting patients at home or in clinical environments by collaborating with onsite healthcare teams. This role helps improve access to healthcare, especially for patients in rural or underserved areas.

Job description

Pre-Admission Nurse

Be the reassuring voice that helps patients feel prepared, informed, and confident before surgery.

Why This Role Matters

Pre-admission nursing sets the tone for the entire surgical experience. Your preparation, education, and communication help reduce anxiety, improve readiness, and support safe, coordinated care from the first phone call through the day of surgery.

About the Role

Manhattan Surgical Hospital is looking for a compassionate, organized, and patient-focused Pre-Admissions Nurse to join our Preop/PACU team. This role is ideal for a nurse who enjoys patient education, careful assessment, clear communication, and helping patients feel at ease before their procedure.

You will play a key role in preparing patients for surgery by gathering health history information, providing pre-operative instructions, coordinating communication with patients and physician offices, and supporting safe, efficient perioperative care.

What You’ll Do
  • Call patients prior to surgery to obtain health histories and provide pre-operative instructions.
  • Answer questions from patients, families, surgery schedulers, and physician offices with professionalism and care.
  • Review and confirm important patient information, including allergies, home medications, medical history, consent, operative laterality, and responsible party.
  • Educate patients and families on what to expect before, during, and after their procedure.
  • Complete preoperative call documentation accurately and in accordance with facility policy.
  • Respect patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality at all times.
  • Participate in staff meetings, mandatory education, staff development programs, and CQI activities.
  • Follow proper procedures related to Category I exposure tasks and hazardous waste materials.
What Makes You a Great Fit
  • You communicate clearly and compassionately with patients, families, providers, and team members.
  • You stay organized and focused while managing frequent interruptions and competing priorities.
  • You bring a professional, pleasant, tactful approach to every interaction.
  • You value confidentiality, patient dignity, and high-quality care.
  • You are comfortable using basic office equipment and computer systems.
Qualifications
  • Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Kansas.
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • ACLS certification required if performing direct patient care.
  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams, required.
  • Six months to one year of relevant experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Work Environment

This position is fully remote; candidate must live within 2 hours driving distance from 1829 College Ave., Manhattan, KS. The Pre-Admission Nurse performs all job duties from a home-based office environment and does not report to a physical facility on a routine basis. Responsibilities are carried out using secure telehealth platforms, electronic medical records (EMR), and other digital communication tools to interact with patients, providers, and interdisciplinary team members. The role requires a private, HIPAA-compliant workspace, reliable high-speed internet, and the ability to work independently with minimal on-site supervision. The nurse must maintain consistent communication via phone, video conferencing, email, and other virtual systems while adhering to organizational policies and regulatory requirements. Applicants must meet and maintain compliance with all requirements outlined in the Facility's Remote Worker Policy as a condition of employment. Occasional in-person meetings or training may be required based on organizational needs.
