Position Summary Information
Job Description Summary
The Interdisciplinary Minors Student Peer Advisor and Office Assistant is a key role within the Interdisciplinary Minors Program department. Throughout the academic year, the Peer Advisor hosts appointments for students to provide guidance and information within their minor. The advisor will utilize their own academic experience in peer advising to encourage students in their own endeavors. Outside of advising, they will offer clerical and event planning support to the Peace & Justice Studies and Interdisciplinary Minors Administrative Assistant.
Responsibilities
  • Contribute to a professional, helpful, welcoming atmosphere and maintain a positive attitude for faculty, staff, students, and visitors of the department.
  • Hold and manage calendar for in-person and virtual appointments and be available during defined drop-in hours. Meetings should be scheduled for 15-30 minutes per student.
  • Complete the Peer Advisor Accountability Tracking sheet via Peer Advisor Canvas Den for every student interaction, email, in-person, or virtual.
  • Respond to all email and phone inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
  • Perform basic intake analysis to determine if they can assist the student themselves or should refer the student to the appropriate department, college, or campus-level resource.
  • Explain and guide students on the importance and relevancy of Program Advisors to assist with enrolling in waitlisted classes, major-related questions, and graduating on schedule.
  • Strive constantly to be accurate and honest in all communication.
  • Attend all training sessions and Peer Advisor meetings.
  • Peer Advisor will act as the Office Assistant by supporting the Department's Administrative Assistant with general, day-to-day administrative, operational, and clerical tasks related to the office.
  • Maintain office inventory.
  • Provide support for a variety of department events including but not limited to International Day of Peace.
  • Other duties as assigned. For example, connect with prospective and incoming students regarding the major program and share student experiences.
Required Qualifications
Little to minimal prior experience. Ability to learn support process. Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with Canva, Photoshop or related graphic design software to create flyers, posters, templates, etc.

Special Instructions to Applicants
Training and Evaluation
Upon hire, training will be required for academic program requirements, policies, and procedures, legal requirements (FERPA), campus resources, and the scope of the position.
Student Peer Advising training will be offered virtually. For training, please contact Maggie Sandoval, Academic Advisor, at masandoval@chapman.edu.
WCAHSS Peer Advisor Program Director will evaluate the performance of the Student Peer Advisor once a semester. Part of this evaluation will be based on the feedback provided by the students on a questionnaire. This questionnaire will provide feedback on the Student Peer Advisor and the program itself, allowing Wilkinson College to continuously improve the program.
