The Role

The Technical Director, Virtual Production & Unreal Engine will be integral to the day-to-day operations of the virtual production stage, ensuring the seamless integration of technology and creativity. This role demands a balance of technical expertise, leadership skills, and a deep understanding of the unique challenges of virtual production.

Core Responsibilities Software Development Expertise
  • Exhibit mastery in all aspects of software development, with a special focus on Unreal Engine.
  • Lead the development and implementation of advanced software solutions to enhance the efficiency and capabilities of the virtual production stage.
Tool Building and Automation
  • Direct and support a team of developers in the creation of bespoke automation tools tailored to the specific needs of virtual production.
  • Continuously evaluate and refine tool-building processes to ensure they meet production requirements and industry standards.
On-Set Problem Solving
  • Provide real-time technical support during production, promptly addressing and resolving any issues that arise on set.
  • Implement proactive strategies to minimize downtime and technical disruptions during filming.
Collaboration with Engine Operators
  • Work closely with engine operators to understand their needs and challenges, ensuring that technical solutions are user-friendly and effective.
  • Facilitate seamless integration of software tools and engine operations, promoting a collaborative and efficient working environment.
Technical Leadership and Team Management
  • Lead and mentor a team of developers, fostering an environment of learning, innovation, and excellence.
  • Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams, including directors, producers, and other technical personnel, to align technical objectives with creative vision.
Quality Assurance and Testing
  • Oversee the testing and quality assurance of all software and tools developed, ensuring they are reliable, efficient, and meet the high standards of virtual production.
  • Stay abreast of new technologies and industry trends, incorporating them into the virtual production process where beneficial.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Extensive experience in software development, particularly in Unreal Engine.
  • Proven track record in tool building and automation within a virtual production or similar environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, especially under the pressure of live production settings.
  • Excellent leadership and team management abilities.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with various teams.
  • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing technologies and production techniques.
Desired Experience
