Sr Mechanical Designer - Piping
Location: Birmingham, Alabama (Hybrid)
Role Overview
We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Designer with a specialization in piping. This hybrid role involves a mix of in-office and remote work, with potential travel to plant and job sites. The successful candidate will provide 3D piping and equipment designs for retrofit, environmental, and new generation projects within the power generation or similar heavy industrial sector. This position requires a self-motivated team player with good organizational skills who can work with minimal instruction.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide 3D piping and equipment designs for various projects.
  • Produce 2D orthographic and isometric drawings, P&IDs, and pipe support designs.
  • Work with engineers and designers from multiple disciplines to ensure safe and effective designs.
  • Apply knowledge of applicable codes and standards to work situations.
  • Gather field data to support the development of deliverables.
  • Prepare material take-offs and assist in the sizing and selection of piping components.
  • Lead multi-discipline technical teams on projects.
  • Review and develop general arrangements.
  • Provide construction support as needed.
Required Qualifications
Experience: This position requires 10+ years of related design experience in mechanical piping systems for new construction or retrofit of power generation facilities or other similar heavy industrial facilities. The role also requires experience with construction support and building effective relationships with plant staff, engineering staff, and vendors.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in using 3D modeling tools for piping system layout and design is required. Candidates must have experience in producing 2D orthographic and isometric drawings, P&IDs, pipe supports, and 3D models. A demonstrated technical background in basic piping construction techniques, practices, and concepts, along with knowledge of pipe/material selection and valve selection, is necessary. Experience checking design drawings and documents is also required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with the Autodesk Plant 3D design tool is highly desired.
Work Environment
This position follows a hybrid work model. The tentative schedule requires a minimum of three days per week in the office, with two days of remote work. The role may require travel to various plant and job sites, potentially up to three days a week, typically accompanied by a direct employee.
