To thrive as a Virtual Intern, you need strong organizational skills, self-motivation, and foundational knowledge relevant to your field, often supported by ongoing education or coursework. Familiarity with digital collaboration tools like Zoom, Slack, Google Workspace, and project management platforms is typically required. Excellent written communication, adaptability, and proactive problem-solving are standout soft skills for remote work environments. What are virtual interns?

Virtual interns are students or professionals who complete internship programs remotely, typically using online communication and collaboration tools rather than working onsite. These internships offer flexibility, allowing participants to gain real-world experience from anywhere with an internet connection. Virtual interns work on projects, attend meetings, and interact with supervisors and team members online, making them ideal for those unable to relocate or commute. This arrangement is increasingly popular across industries, providing valuable career development opportunities while maintaining flexibility.

How do virtual interns typically stay connected and collaborate with their teams?

Virtual interns often use a combination of digital tools such as video conferencing platforms, instant messaging apps, and project management software to stay connected with their teams. Job description

Position Title: Intern
Location: Remote, but must be a college student/grad residing in the U.S.
About the Active Minds Internship Program
Active Minds is the nation's leading nonprofit organization changing the culture around mental health. Through our presence at more than 800 high school and college campuses, in corporate settings, and with a wide-reaching public audience, Active Minds is creating communities of support and saving lives. Founded in 2003 by Alison Malmon after the tragic suicide of her brother Brian, Active Minds is dedicated to supporting a new generation in ending the silence, helping to make mental health as highly valued as physical health. Through our many programs - including the emotionally gripping Send Silence Packingยฎ traveling exhibit and our compelling Active Minds Speakers - we are changing culture and behaviors related to mental health across the country.
Our internships are geared towards current college students and recent college graduates. As a small nonprofit, Active Minds relies on the help of our interns tremendously. They work directly on important initiatives and projects and assist staff on a variety of administrative tasks. Interns have the opportunity to do substantive work, gain experience in the nonprofit sector, and help change the culture around mental health.
All Fall 2026 internships will be remote, with an anticipated start date of September 14th, 2026 and an anticipated end date of December 4th, 2026. We expect interns to work a minimum of 20 hours a week, set a consistent work schedule between 9:00am and 5:00pm EST Monday through Friday, and commit to staying on board for the entire semester.
Active Minds pays interns $18 per hour.
Community Initiatives Internship
As part of the Programs team, the Community Initiatives intern will collaborate with both our Community Programs (Send Silence Packing and Speakers Bureau) and Workforce Development teams to engage communities and initiate the conversation around mental health as well as support developing and implementing programs to pipeline young and emerging professionals into traditional and non-traditional mental health-related professions.
Some key responsibilities may include: event coordination, moderating virtual events, communication with speakers and clients, administrative tasks, email and marketing campaigns, research projects, provide support in researching traditional and nontraditional career paths in mental health and other related fields, and assist with initiatives being developed to support young professionals in the transition to the workplace, and additional projects as assigned. They will also have the opportunity to collaborate with our broader Programs department teams in unique ways.
Community Initiatives Interns are valued members of the team who support the mission and vision of our work through a variety of projects in ways both big and small.
Qualifications:
  • Interest in mental health and uplifting young adult voices
  • Event planning and coordination experience preferred
  • Strong written and communications skills
  • Detail-oriented and well organized
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Flexible team player, motivated collaborator
  • Openness and willingness to learn new tasks for special projects
  • Knowledge of Google Workspace, Zoom, Dropbox, Microsoft Office, and CRM Tools are a plus

Eligibility Requirements:
  • All applicants must be currently enrolled in, or have previously attended, a U.S. based college or university
  • All applicants must be able to complete a work authorization (I-9) during onboarding
  • All applicants must be able to complete the entirety of the internship program during the listed dates in the job description

Application Process
The application cycle for the Fall 2026 Internship Program will be open from Wednesday, June 24th, 2026 through Wednesday, July 8th, 2026. When completing the application, please thoughtfully answer each application question in complete and authentic sentences as we thoroughly review every applicant.
Applicants selected for an interview will be contacted by late July-early August 2026 regarding scheduling next steps.
