Bookkeeper / Accountant

Better World Builders, LLC
Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan — In-House or Virtual/Remote

About Better World Builders

Better World Builders is a growing home-performance and construction company based in Kalamazoo, Michigan. We help homeowners improve comfort, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and the durability of their homes.

We are seeking an experienced, dependable Bookkeeper/Accountant to manage our day-to-day accounting functions and maintain accurate, timely financial records. This position may be performed in-house at our Kalamazoo office or virtually, depending on the candidate’s experience, availability, and ability to work effectively with our team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate financial records using QuickBooks Desktop
  • Manage accounts receivable and accounts payable
  • Prepare and send customer invoices
  • Record customer payments and follow up on outstanding balances
  • Review vendor invoices and prepare payments
  • Reconcile bank, credit-card, loan, and other financial accounts
  • Process payroll accurately and on schedule
  • Maintain payroll records, deductions, and employee information
  • Maintain subcontractor records, including W-9s, insurance certificates, agreements, and payment information
  • Track subcontractor payments and prepare information needed for 1099 reporting
  • Maintain organized supporting documentation for financial transactions
  • Assist with job-costing and expense allocation
  • Prepare routine financial reports for company leadership
  • Coordinate with the company’s CPA, payroll provider, insurance professionals, and other financial partners
  • Assist with month-end and year-end closing procedures
  • Help maintain internal financial controls and protect confidential company and employee information
  • Support additional accounting and administrative responsibilities as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience using QuickBooks Desktop
  • Experience with accounts receivable and accounts payable
  • Experience preparing invoices and tracking customer payments
  • Payroll-processing experience
  • Experience maintaining vendor and subcontractor information
  • Strong understanding of bookkeeping and accounting principles
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and other Microsoft 365 applications
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally
  • Ability to handle payroll, employee, customer, and company information with complete confidentiality
  • Reliable internet connection and an appropriate confidential workspace if working virtually

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, or a related field
  • Previous accounting or bookkeeping experience with a construction or contracting company
  • Familiarity with construction job-costing
  • Experience working with subcontractors and project-based billing
  • Experience in home performance, weatherization, energy auditing, HVAC, insulation, or energy-efficiency programs
  • Experience using a customer relationship management system, or CRM
  • Experience working with Builder Prime or a similar construction CRM
  • Familiarity with government, utility, rebate, or grant-funded projects
  • Experience preparing management reports, budgets, and cash-flow forecasts

Work Arrangement

This position may be:

  • In-house at our Kalamazoo, Michigan office;

Remote candidates must be available during agreed-upon Eastern Time business hours and able to communicate regularly with company leadership and office staff.

Compensation

Compensation:  $48k to $65k based on accounting experience, construction-industry knowledge, qualifications, and whether the position is structured as full-time or part-time.
