Video Journalism information

What is video journalism?

Video journalism is a form of journalism where news and stories are reported using video footage rather than traditional print or radio. Video journalists often research, shoot, edit, and present stories themselves, sometimes working independently with lightweight cameras or smartphones. This approach allows for quick, on-the-ground reporting and is commonly used in online news, television broadcasts, and social media. Video journalism combines elements of storytelling, visual communication, and technical skills to engage audiences with dynamic content.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a video journalist?

To thrive as a Video Journalist, you need strong storytelling abilities, video production skills, and a background in journalism or communications, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with video editing software (such as Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro), camera operation, and digital content management systems is typically required. Creativity, adaptability, and excellent interpersonal communication help video journalists connect with audiences and sources alike. These skills and qualities are vital for producing engaging, accurate, and timely video news content in a fast-paced media environment.

How does a video journalist typically collaborate with editors and producers during the production process?

Video journalists frequently work closely with editors and producers to shape compelling stories. After gathering footage and conducting interviews in the field, they usually review material with editors to ensure clarity and narrative flow. Producers often provide guidance on story angles, deadlines, and logistical support, making teamwork essential for timely, high-quality reporting. Clear communication and adaptability are key, as last-minute changes or breaking news may require rapid coordination among all team members.

Video Journalism and Photojournalism both involve visual storytelling for news media, often in similar environments. Video Journalism emphasizes capturing and editing moving images and sound, while Photojournalism focuses on still images. Both roles require strong storytelling skills and are used across broadcast and online platforms. The main difference lies in the medium—video versus photos—though they often overlap in news reporting contexts.

How much does a video journalist make?

The average salary for a video journalist varies depending on experience, location, and employer, but typically ranges from $30,000 to $70,000 annually. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced professionals with strong editing and reporting skills can earn higher salaries, especially in larger media markets.

What does a video journalist do?

A video journalist creates news stories by filming, editing, and producing video content for broadcast or online platforms. They often work independently, handling tasks such as reporting, camera operation, and post-production using editing software, and may cover a variety of topics depending on their assignment.

Job description

Position Summary:
The Editor, Visuals will be a leader and champion of visual storytelling across MPR News, shaping how journalism is conceived, presented, and experienced on every channel (platform). This role carries dual responsibility: driving strong visual editorial judgment throughout the newsroom and helping improve the production systems and workflows that bring that journalism to life.
At the core of this position is a commitment to elevating visual thinking from the very beginning of the editorial process. The editor will be a key voice in story planning conversations - helping reporters, producers, and editors identify visual opportunities before assignments develop and ensuring that the strongest visual approach is considered alongside the story itself. This includes guiding decisions around lead images, visual narratives and innovative video storytelling in shaping how stories are presented and building a newsroom culture where visual judgment is valued at every level.
In fast-moving news situations, this editor will help teams make strong visual decisions quickly - prioritizing coverage, allocating resources effectively, and identifying where visual storytelling can have the greatest impact for our audience. Timely visual feedback and editorial clarity are essential to this work.
The editor brings expert experience with the tools and technology of visual newsgathering and news production, with priority on audio and video. Working in close partnership with Operations/Production, the editor reviews and implements production tools and technology systems, ensuring all team members have the foundational support they need to create compelling, engaging content. The editor develops detailed plans to reach concrete goals and works hands-on to realize them: directing work and coordinating visual staff and freelancers, and training staff on audio, visual (still and video), digital production, and CMS.
In addition to leadership and team building responsibilities, the editor will produce and edit exceptional daily visual news, features, explainers, evergreen content, and long-term projects - modeling the visual standards and storytelling strategy they champion across the newsroom.
The ability to collaborate effectively with news leaders, reporters, and cross-departmental teams is essential. In a multichannel environment where visuals shape audience engagement and first impressions, this editor helps ensure that MPR News content informs, includes, and inspires Minnesota audiences across the state.
This position sits in the collective bargaining agreement between MPR and Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists ("SAG-AFTRA").
Expected Compensation Range: $39.42 - $47.30 per hour. The exact salary rate is determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure, and internal equity.
