To thrive as a Video Game Tester, you need strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and a good understanding of gaming platforms and software, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with bug tracking tools such as JIRA, test case management systems, and knowledge of various gaming consoles and PC hardware are commonly required. Excellent communication, patience, and problem-solving skills help testers report issues clearly and collaborate effectively with development teams. These skills ensure thorough game evaluation, efficient issue resolution, and improved overall game quality before release.

What are some common challenges faced by video game testers, and how can they be addressed?

Video game testers frequently encounter challenges such as repetitive tasks, tight deadlines, and the need to document bugs in precise detail. It can also be demanding to play unfinished or buggy builds for extended periods, which requires patience and a keen eye for detail. Effective communication with developers and other testers is essential to ensure issues are clearly understood and prioritized. Building strong time management skills and maintaining a collaborative attitude helps testers overcome these challenges and contribute to a smoother game development process.

Job description

Job Summary:
Bethesda Game Studios is the award-winning development team behind Starfield, The Elder Scrolls, and Fallout. They are seeking a Live Producer to manage live readiness and operational support for their game environments, ensuring quality and stability across all titles and releases.
Responsibilities:
โ€ข Partner across teams from early development through long-term support, building the systems, standards, and processes that ensure live readiness.
โ€ข Manage the health, stability, and quality of live and pre-live game environments across all titles and release types.
โ€ข Serve as an on-call resource for a 24/7 live service, supporting operational needs beyond standard working hours across releases, incidents, readiness activities, and other critical periods.
โ€ข Triage issues across internal development and live service environments, coordinating with relevant teams to assess risk, drive resolution, and manage player impact.
โ€ข Manage the scheduling, testing, deployment, and communication of game updates and hotfixes, partnering with Release Management and technical teams to triage and resolve issues.
โ€ข Regularly play the games you support, identifying experiential issues such as flow breaks, stability degradation, or performance problems that technical checklists and metrics miss.
โ€ข Communicate product health, readiness, risks, and recommendations clearly to internal leadership, enabling informed decisions early. Inform initiative prioritization by clearly framing tradeoffs across player impact, operational risk, and development capacity.
โ€ข Coordinate technical initiatives across internal, cross-org, and contractor teams, ensuring quality and operational alignment as tools, pipelines, and needs evolve.
โ€ข Support contractor integration by serving as the central point of contact for onboarding and escalation, connecting contractors to the right people when blockers arise.
โ€ข Drive predictability and continuous improvement by applying lessons learned from releases and live incidents, supported by release reporting, metrics, retrospectives, and operational insights.
โ€ข Take on adjacent responsibilities as needed to support reliable releases as products, partners, tools, and operational needs evolve.
Qualifications:
Required:
โ€ข You have 3+ years of endโ€‘toโ€‘end, handsโ€‘on AAA live service and production ownership across online titles, including multiโ€‘product operations, readiness planning, dependency management, and multi-title release coordination.
โ€ข You have experience with CI/CD pipelines (e.g.. Jenkins, Azure DevOps), deployment automation, and build stability practices including self-healing systems.
โ€ข You excel at leveraging automation solutions and tools to streamline workflows and minimize manual effort.
โ€ข You have a demonstrated ability to plan, track, and deliver on complex, multi-disciplinary initiatives.
โ€ข You have working knowledge of cloud technologies and online game infrastructure.
โ€ข You communicate clearly with internal stakeholders, with exceptional attention to detail. You adapt effectively in dynamic, ambiguous environments with competing priorities.
โ€ข You spot risks early and drive solutions that protect quality and multi-title delivery.
โ€ข You are experienced with agile development practices.
Preferred:
โ€ข You have experience in multiple game disciplines (design, engineering, art, or QA).
โ€ข You are experienced with first-party platform tools and services (Sony DevNet, Microsoft Partner Center, Steamworks).
โ€ข You have strong familiarity with BGS games.
