Job description

The Area Vice President (AVP) leads the operations of a geographical area, driving P&L, strategy, and growth in waste collection and landfill operations. This role centers on operational excellence, safety, and strong client relations, ensuring consistent performance across all lines of business. The incumbent will focus on cost optimization through new technologies, vendor management, and sustainable practices while managing regional teams, upholding regulatory compliance, and overseeing significant P&L responsibility in a fastpaced, dynamic environment.


  • Develops and executes regional strategies for growth, efficiency, sustainability, and market expansion.
  • Manages the Profit & Loss (P&L), budgeting, forecasting, revenue maximization, and cost control of a geographical area.
  • Oversees daily operations, logistics (transporting and processing), and implements best practices for collection, sorting, and disposal.
  • Maintains key client programs, negotiates contracts, and builds strong relationships with generators and processors.
  • Provides leadership to team members through effective communication, establishing clear goals and objectives, coaching team members on goal achievement, and ensuring access to training and development opportunities that assist employees in attaining the necessary skills to achieve desired team and organizational results.
  • Hires, trains, mentors, and leads high-performing management teams, fostering engagement and a strong safety culture.
  • Drives environmental initiatives ensuring adherence to regulations, and tracks KPIs for waste diversion and alternative fuel (AFR) usage.
  • Implements operational improvement plans or initiatives and prepares supporting analysis under the guidance of the Regional Vice President and Sr. Vice President & COO of Solid Waste Operations.
  • Conducts monthly MOR meetings with division leaders in conjunction with the Regional Controller and RVP.
  • Executes programs to improve safety, DOT compliance, training and turnover reduction.
  • Participates in training and other learning opportunities to expand knowledge of the organization’s products, sales and services, and performs other applicable duties necessary to help drive the organization’s vision and to fulfill its mission, in line with its core values.
  • Ensures compliance with all organization, state and federal policies, regulations, and laws regarding employment and employee safety.

The successful candidate will hold a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management or a related field, with 10+ years of leadership experience in the waste and recycling industry, including operations or controller level roles, along with demonstrated accountability for multi location, multi million dollar P&L performance. This role requires proven success managing large, diverse teams across field operations, as well as a deep understanding of the North American waste and recycling market, competitive dynamics, industry trends, regulatory policies, and emerging technologies. Strong communication, critical thinking, problem solving, and business development skills are essential, along with the ability to work effectively in collaborative, team oriented environments. A valid driver’s license is required, with the ability to travel up to 50% of the time, including periodic overnight travel.
