What is a Vice President Fractional Controller?

A Vice President Fractional Controller is a senior financial professional who provides part-time or contract-based oversight of a company's accounting and financial operations. Unlike a full-time controller, a fractional controller works with multiple organizations, often small to mid-sized businesses, to deliver high-level financial leadership and strategic guidance. Their responsibilities typically include financial reporting, budgeting, compliance, and process improvement, helping companies maintain strong financial health without the cost of a full-time executive. This role is ideal for businesses that need executive-level financial expertise but do not require a full-time hire.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Vice President Fractional Controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Vice President Fractional Controller, you need deep expertise in accounting, financial reporting, and strategic financial planning, usually supported by a CPA or equivalent accounting qualification. Familiarity with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, advanced Excel skills, and financial analysis tools is typically required. Exceptional leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help you manage multiple client relationships and drive financial improvements. These abilities ensure effective financial oversight, compliance, and value creation for diverse organizations in a fractional or part-time capacity.
