How much do vhdl verilog jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 4, 2026, the average yearly pay for vhdl verilog in the United States is $147,315.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $130,000.00 and $167,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are VHDL and Verilog?

VHDL (VHSIC Hardware Description Language) and Verilog are both hardware description languages used to model and design digital electronic systems such as FPGAs and ASICs. They allow engineers to describe the behavior, structure, and layout of electronic circuits at various levels of abstraction. VHDL is known for its strong typing and verbose syntax, while Verilog is often considered more concise and similar to the C programming language. Both languages are widely used in industry and academia for simulation, synthesis, and verification of digital designs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a VHDL/Verilog engineer?

To thrive as a VHDL/Verilog Engineer, you need a solid understanding of digital logic design, FPGA/ASIC development, and proficiency in hardware description languages like VHDL and Verilog, often supported by an electrical engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation tools (e.g., ModelSim, Vivado), synthesis tools, and debugging hardware is typically required, and certifications in FPGA or ASIC design can be advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective problem-solving skills help you excel in complex projects and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies ensure accurate design implementation, efficient troubleshooting, and successful hardware development cycles.

What are some common challenges faced by VHDL/Verilog engineers when working on FPGA or ASIC design projects?

VHDL/Verilog engineers often encounter challenges related to debugging complex logic, ensuring timing closure, and managing design constraints when working on FPGA or ASIC projects. Collaborating with hardware and verification teams is essential, as effective communication helps resolve integration issues and ensures designs meet specifications. Keeping up with evolving design tools and methodologies is also important for continuous improvement and efficient project delivery.

What is the difference between Vhdl Verilog vs FPGA Designer?

AspectVhdl VerilogFPGA Designer
CredentialsKnowledge of hardware description languages, certifications varySimilar, often requires certifications in FPGA design
Work EnvironmentDesigning digital circuits, simulation, codingDesigning and implementing FPGA-based systems
Industry UsageUsed in ASIC/FPGA development, embedded systemsPrimarily in FPGA development projects
Comparison FocusLanguage syntax and coding practicesDesign implementation and system integration

While Vhdl Verilog are hardware description languages used for digital circuit design, FPGA Designer focuses on the practical implementation and integration of FPGA systems. Both roles often overlap in skills and industry applications, but Vhdl Verilog emphasizes coding, whereas FPGA Designer emphasizes system deployment.

Job description

The Digital Hardware Engineer will design, implement, and validate advanced digital systems

with an emphasis on FPGA-based development. The engineer will translate functional or

algorithmic specifications into optimized HDL architectures, perform simulation and

verification, and integrate these designs into prototypes and full hardware systems. This role

requires expertise in complex, highspeed digital design and hands-on experience bringing FPGA

implementations into working hardware.

In addition to digital design, the engineer will develop and test supporting hardware such as

power distribution, digital control and other PCBs. Responsibilities include building and refining

prototypes, diagnosing and resolving defects, overseeing hardware integration, and maintaining

detailed design documentation. The ideal candidate has strong FPGA/HDL skills, experience

with hardware design tools, and the ability to evaluate, iterate, and improve both digital and

physical system performance.

Required Skills:

 5 years or more of relevant design experience, hands-on radar systems design, system

realization, and field testing of HF and microwave radar systems.

 Strong knowledge of VHDL/Verilog, Vivado/ISE, ISIM, EDK, System Generator, 3rd

Part IP

 Developing VHDL/Verilog test benches for functional and timing simulation

 Detailed PCB design and bring up using Mentor Graphics and Altium

 Usage of Test Equipment, RF signal generators, Oscilloscopes and Logic Analyzers

Working in Windows 7/10 and Linux environments, and TCL

 Candidate should be familiar with digital receiver design, including direct detect (i.e. RF

sampling) receiver architectures

 Proficiency with MATLAB

 Candidate must have good organizational skills with the ability to complete assignments

working independently and in a team environment, and effectively present results.

 Effective communication with colleagues, sponsors, and other research sites

 Radar timing and basic signal processing.

 RF converters

 Xilinx FPGA development and test in an Embedded environment

 PCB design, schematic capture, component selections and simulation using

Altium/Mentor Graphics. Evaluating design tradeoff against speed and resource

utilization

 Strong knowledge and understanding of analog/digital components, ADC and DAC

performances

 Experience with various hardware interfaces and communication: PCIe, I2C, LVDS,

Serial Data over Fiber Optics with Protocol knowledge

 Software design and development in C/C++

 Desire and ability to participate in field experiments and data collection efforts, which

could involve travel

Work location: Hybrid - Candidates should expect to be onsite 3 days a week

Clearance: Candidates must have an active secret clearance to be considered for this role
