What is an entry-level VHDL job?

VHDL entry level jobs are positions for individuals who are new to using VHDL (VHSIC Hardware Description Language) in the field of digital design and verification. These roles typically involve tasks like writing, simulating, and testing VHDL code to describe the behavior of digital circuits, often as part of a larger engineering team. Entry-level positions may include job titles such as VHDL Developer, FPGA Engineer, or Digital Design Engineer, and generally require a background in electrical engineering or computer engineering, along with some hands-on experience with VHDL. These jobs help recent graduates or early-career professionals gain practical skills in hardware design and verification, often working under the supervision of senior engineers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry-level VHDL engineer?

To thrive as an Entry-Level VHDL Engineer, you need a solid understanding of digital logic design, VHDL programming, and a relevant degree in electrical or computer engineering. Familiarity with FPGA development tools such as Xilinx Vivado or Intel Quartus, as well as simulation software like ModelSim, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial for efficiently designing and verifying digital systems, ensuring reliable hardware solutions that meet project requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by entry-level VHDL engineers, and how can they overcome them?

Entry-level VHDL engineers often encounter challenges such as understanding complex hardware design concepts, debugging synthesis issues, and learning effective simulation techniques. Collaborating closely with senior engineers and regularly reviewing code with mentors can help accelerate learning. Utilizing available documentation, seeking feedback, and dedicating time to hands-on practice with simulation tools are effective ways to build proficiency and confidence in VHDL design.

What is the difference between Vhdl Entry Level vs Vhdl Designer?

AspectVhdl Entry LevelVhdl Designer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering or related field, basic VHDL knowledgeAdvanced VHDL skills, experience, often a degree or certification
Work EnvironmentEntry-level projects, supervised tasks, team collaborationDesign and development of complex FPGA/ASIC projects, independent work
Industry UsageUsed in semiconductor, electronics companies for initial tasksUsed for detailed design, verification, and optimization

Vhdl Entry Level roles focus on foundational tasks and learning, while Vhdl Designer positions involve advanced design responsibilities. Both roles are essential in the FPGA and ASIC development process, with the entry level serving as a stepping stone to more complex design work.

What jobs use VHDL?

VHDL is primarily used in jobs related to digital design, FPGA development, and ASIC design. Roles such as FPGA engineer, digital design engineer, and hardware description language (HDL) developer require VHDL skills to create and simulate hardware models and circuits. These positions often involve using tools like ModelSim or Vivado and may require knowledge of hardware testing and verification processes.

  • Bonus payments every 6 months
  • Rich health plans
  • Retirement planning with our 100% company-paid Employee Stock Ownership Trust

If you’re mechanically inclined or technically savvy with a passion for cutting-edge technology, we want to hear from you.

Position Summary

This entry-level position is on a small firmware sub-team within our Electrical Engineering R&D department. In this role, you will focus on the design, implementation, and testing of embedded code. Our control architecture features a tight coupling between C++ code running on a DSP and VHDL running on an FPGA. Because we push the boundaries of high-precision automation, you will be optimizing algorithms to meet the requirements of our hard real-time system. This role offers the chance to collaborate directly with veteran engineers boasting decades of motion control expertise.

What Will Your Day Look Like? At Aerotech, You Will:
  • Use C++ to implement new firmware modules based on high-level system requirements and update existing modules to fix bugs and improve functionality.
  • Develop, simulate, and debug VHDL code running on an FPGA to ensure tight, predictable interaction with the DSP and other hardware devices.
  • Work closely with the hardware design team and use your ability to read schematics and operate electronic test equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes, logic analyzers) to test and debug C++ and VHDL code running on our motion control hardware.
  • Conduct rigorous testing on real motion control systems to verify that new firmware features function correctly and operate within the defined design parameters.
  • Collaborate with other members of R&D, including Software and Mechanical Engineering, along with other departments like Product Management, Sales, and Global Technical Support, to solve technical challenges and provide our customers with the highest performance motion control products possible.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor of Science (BS) or Master of Science (MS) degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field from an ABET-accredited college or university.
  • Experience: Zero to two years of professional, post-graduation experience focusing on embedded software/firmware development.
  • Programming Skills: Proficiency with C/C++ programming and experience with a hardware description language (e.g., VHDL, Verilog, SystemVerilog).
  • Hardware Awareness: Experience using electronic test instruments (e.g., multimeters, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers) to troubleshoot code on physical hardware.
  • Location: Must be located in the Pittsburgh area or be willing to relocate to the area. This is a primarily on-site position at our Pittsburgh headquarters with the potential for some hybrid flexibility.
  • Legal Authorization: Must be authorized to work in the United States currently and in the future without employer sponsorship. Aerotech does not provide US work authorization sponsorship for this position. OPT and CPT visa holders are not eligible.
