What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time VHDL Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time VHDL Engineer, you need strong skills in digital logic design, VHDL coding, and FPGA or ASIC development, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with hardware description language tools such as ModelSim, Xilinx Vivado, and Altera Quartus, as well as relevant certifications, is valuable. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are important soft skills for collaborating with teams and troubleshooting complex designs. These skills ensure accurate implementation of digital systems and efficient project delivery within part-time constraints.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time VHDL engineers, and how can they effectively manage their workload?

Part-time VHDL engineers often face the challenge of balancing limited hours with the need to meet project deadlines and maintain code quality. Since hardware design and verification cycles can be complex, effective time management and clear communication with the team are essential. Utilizing version control systems, maintaining detailed documentation, and regularly syncing with full-time colleagues can help part-time engineers stay aligned with project goals and avoid bottlenecks. Flexibility and proactive planning also ensure that critical tasks are prioritized during available work hours.

What are part-time VHDL jobs?

Part-time VHDL jobs involve working on projects or tasks related to VHDL (VHSIC Hardware Description Language) for less than a standard full-time schedule, often 20 hours or fewer per week. These roles typically focus on designing, simulating, and verifying digital circuits using VHDL, and they may be available in industries such as electronics, telecommunications, or embedded systems. Part-time VHDL positions are ideal for students, freelancers, or professionals seeking flexible work arrangements while applying their hardware design and programming skills.

What is the difference between Part Time Vhdl vs Part Time FPGA Designer?

AspectPart Time VhdlPart Time FPGA Designer
Required SkillsVHDL programming, digital designVHDL, FPGA development, digital circuit design
Work EnvironmentElectronics companies, consulting firmsElectronics, semiconductor, or tech companies
CertificationsVHDL certifications, digital design coursesVHDL certifications, FPGA design certifications
Industry UsageDesign and simulation of digital systemsFPGA implementation and prototyping

Part Time Vhdl focuses on VHDL coding and digital logic design, often for simulation or verification. Part Time FPGA Designer involves applying VHDL skills to develop and implement FPGA-based solutions. While both roles require VHDL expertise, FPGA Designer emphasizes hardware implementation and prototyping, making it more hardware-oriented.

Job description

The EW Division of Leidos is looking for a Consulting Employee to support FPGA DSP Firmware Design Engineering work with a multi-disciplined design team (electrical engineers, systems engineers, scientists, etc) to design, develop, simulate, and integrate challenging DSP FPGA designs and RF sensor systems based on given project requirements. Candidate will have a strong background in Digital Signal Processing (DSP) algorithms and their implementation in MATLAB and FPGAs in support of a fast paced, multi-disciplinary design team. This role will also support integration, test, and verification in the final products. This position is expected to be part-time and can support telecommuting options.

Primary Responsibilities:
Analyze, design, simulate, and implement algorithms in hardware descriptor languages, HDL (VHDL, Verilog), based on customer requirements and/or MATLAB model(s).
Collaborate with a multi-disciplined design team (electrical engineers, systems engineers and scientists) to design and integrate challenging DSP FPGA designs and RF sensor systems.
Collaborate with a multi-disciplined design team to design and integrate DSP applications for latest System on a Chip (SoC) implementations such as Xilinx Zynq Ultrascale+, Intel Stratix-10, and Xilinx RFSoC.
Analyze, design, and implement HDL test benches in hardware description languages, HDL (VHDL, Verilog), for code validation and validation against models.
Perform design constraints generation and verification as well as evaluate synthesis and timing performance reports.
Implement and validate signal processing concepts such as FFTs, channelizers, digital filters, digital modulation, digital down/up-conversion, adaptive processing, etc. into either new or existing modular HDL designs.
Analyze, design, simulate, and implement designs which interface to common signaling standards, typical IP hard macros such as SERDES, PLLS, etc. and/or protocols such PCIe, JESD204B, LVDS, etc.
Analyze schematic diagrams for either custom or commercial-off-the shelf (COTS) electronic hardware involving high-speed digital and/or analog circuitry in associated FPGA-centric systems.
Develop and maintain requirements documents, functional specification documents, interface control documents, etc.
Generate and maintain engineering drawings and configuration management policies for FPGA project hierarchy.
Develop project test plans and test procedures, provide test planning support, and assist in the execution of both lab testing and field testing.
Provide occasional technical support and/or field support planning, and other field support in general if needed.
Conduct experimental tests on latest FPGA and SoC evaluation boards, evaluate results, and then develop specifications for selecting next-generation components for deliverable systems.
