What does a vessel planner do?

A Vessel Planner is responsible for efficiently planning the loading and unloading of cargo on container ships to maximize space utilization and ensure safe, balanced stowage. They coordinate with terminal operations, shipping lines, and port authorities to create stowage plans that align with port schedules and operational constraints. Vessel Planners use specialized software to optimize cargo placement, considering weight distribution, container size, and hazardous materials restrictions. Their role helps minimize delays, improve turnaround times, and enhance overall port efficiency.

What does a typical day look like for a vessel planner?

A typical day for a Vessel Planner involves developing detailed stowage plans for incoming vessels, coordinating with stevedores, terminal staff, and shipping line representatives to ensure precise loading and unloading of containers. You may review shipping schedules, solve space optimization challenges, and adjust plans in real time if there are vessel delays or unexpected changes. Much of your time will be spent using specialized planning software and communicating updates to various teams across the terminal. The environment can be fast-paced, requiring multitasking and quick problem-solving to avoid operational bottlenecks. Over time, Vessel Planners often gain exposure to leadership roles or broader terminal operations management opportunities.

To thrive as a Vessel Planner, you need strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of container operations, and experience with logistics or maritime operations, often backed by relevant educational qualifications. Familiarity with terminal operating systems (TOS), vessel planning software (such as Navis N4), and safety certifications are typically required. Exceptional organizational abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for this position. These competencies are essential to ensure efficient cargo stowage, minimize delays, and coordinate successfully with port, vessel, and logistics teams.

Job description

About Vessel

Vessel is building the future of housing. We combine breakthrough design, advanced manufacturing, and first-principles thinking to tackle one of the world's most pressing challenges: creating sustainable, attainable housing for all. This isn't just construction-it's a complete reimagining of how people live.

Backed by Mosaic Ventures and Lennar, the nation's largest homebuilder, Vessel is rapidly scaling to meet growing demand. We care deeply about every detail-from beauty and durability to efficiency and accessibility-because we believe everyone deserves a thoughtfully made home.

The Opportunity

Vessel is growing rapidly, and we are looking for a Head of Production Systems to design and build our end-to-end production operating system. This is a true builder role. You will not inherit a mature system, you will create one from the ground up. You will define how materials move, how work is planned and executed, and how the system scales across multiple locations. This role requires high ownership, comfort with ambiguity, and the ability to drive change across the organization.

$200,000 - $225,000 a year

What You'll Do

  • Design and implement end-to-end production systems, including planning, workflows, and operating rhythms
  • Build and maintain visibility into production performance through KPIs, dashboards, and reporting
  • Define and optimize material flow, sequencing, and downstream deployment
  • Identify inefficiencies and improve throughput, labor efficiency, and operational reliability
  • Evaluate and implement automation, tooling, and pre-processing solutions
  • Drive supplier strategy and cost reduction initiatives aligned with production system design
  • Partner cross-functionally with operations, sourcing, and leadership to align execution with system design
  • Translate current operations into scalable, repeatable systems across locations

Who You Are

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Operations, Supply Chain, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).  MBA strongly preferred.
  • 7-12+ years of experience in operations, logistics, manufacturing or production systems environments
  • Have worked in high-growth startups with physical operations
and have stood up or scaled real-world systems (not just managed them)
  • Proven ownership of operational outcomes (throughput, cost, delivery reliability)
  • Strong systems thinker with end-to-end workflow orientation
  • High agency and execution mindset; moves quickly from concept to implementation
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguity and building in incomplete environments
  • Experience with planning systems (MRP/ERP or similar)
  • Familiarity with operational metrics, performance tracking, and data-driven decision making
  • Experience in high-growth or early-stage environments where systems had to be built, not maintained

Why Vessel

  • Opportunity to shape and scale a modern multifamily development company
  • Competitive compensation with performance bonus and equity options
  • 401k & Health Plans (Medical, Dental, and Vision), including HSA/FSA options
  • Life, AD&D, and Disability Insurance, plus Critical Illness and Accident Insurance
  • Weekly lunches and team building events
  • Adoption Assistance, Caregiver Support, and Financial Assistance through Employee Support Programs
  • Commuter Benefits

At Vessel

We believe everyone deserves a home built with care-beautiful, durable, and made to last. That starts with the people who make it happen. Join us and help reimagine what housing can be.

We may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support parts of the hiring process, such as reviewing applications, analyzing resumes, or assessing responses and identifying potential inconsistencies or verification signals in application materials based on available information.
