Position Summary

The Farm Assistant will work directly with the Farm Manager to ensure the success of the Guilford College Farm in achieving its diverse objectives. Theunique context combining vegetable production and education will require an open mind in addition to applying one's prior experience in gardening or agriculture.

Duties and Responsibilities:
-Growing and Harvesting:
Shares in all aspects of daily farm operations including seeding and propagation, transplanting, cultivation andweed management, prevention and mitigation of pests and diseases, harvesting, and wash-pack procedures.

-Direct Marketing:
Assists with seasonal on-site markets, outside vendor sales, and helps to support the relationship with campus dining services.


-Farm Maintenance and Organization:
Participates in ongoing maintenance and repair of basic farm infrastructure as well as everyday upkeep of a shared workspace and adherence to standard operating procedures.


-Education:
Helps to fulfill the farm's function as a living laboratory and educational resource for the College, providing student workers and volunteers with the knowledge and oversight to complete a wide range of farm tasks. This position may occasionally facilitate tours and group visits to the farm.
Skills and specifications:
-The ideal candidate should be physically fit and capable of doing moderate to strenuous physical labor on an ongoing basis. This work involves bending and squatting, lifting and hauling 50lbs or more on occasion, performing repetitive tasks, and dealing with the conditions of year-round outdoor work.
-Requires a familiarity with the basics of growing vegetables and a willingness to expand that knowledge to the market scale. Farm production experience and prior use of common small-scale agricultural tools and equipment is preferred.
-To ensure the success of the farm one must be reliable, efficient and thorough. Taking pride in doing good work will be of utmost importance.
-Farms are spaces in constant flux that benefit from a commitment to organization, cleanliness and timely maintenance. Ongoing upkeep and workflow refinement will require resourcefulness and an aptitude for problem solving.
-Candidates should have the ability to work effectively with others in a setting of diverse ideas and voices. While it is important to foster connections with the student body in order to drive involvement in farm activities, one is expected to always be professional in these interactions.

This position is Part-time (24 hours/week, schedule TBD).
