What is the difference between Value Engineering vs Cost Estimator?

AspectValue EngineeringCost Estimator
CredentialsProfessional certifications like SAVE, PECPAs, CPCs, or industry-specific certifications
Work EnvironmentDesign teams, project managers, constructionConstruction firms, engineering companies, project planning
Industry UsageConstruction, manufacturing, engineeringConstruction, engineering, architecture

Value Engineering focuses on analyzing and improving project value by optimizing costs and functions, often during design phases. Cost Estimators primarily develop detailed cost projections for projects, ensuring budgets are accurate. While both roles involve cost considerations, Value Engineering emphasizes value optimization, whereas Cost Estimators focus on precise cost calculation.

What is value engineering?

Value engineering is a systematic method used to improve the value of a project, product, or process by analyzing its functions and seeking ways to reduce cost without compromising quality, performance, or reliability. It involves a team-based approach to examine all aspects of a project and identify opportunities for innovation and cost savings. Value engineering is commonly used in construction, manufacturing, and product design to maximize efficiency and deliver better results within budget constraints.

How does a Value Engineer typically collaborate with other departments during a project lifecycle?

Value Engineers work closely with cross-functional teams such as design, procurement, and project management to identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality. They regularly participate in multidisciplinary meetings to review project specifications, suggest alternative materials or processes, and ensure proposed changes align with functional requirements. This collaborative approach helps streamline decision-making, increase project efficiency, and deliver greater value to clients. Effective communication and negotiation skills are essential in ensuring all stakeholders are aligned on proposed solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Value Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Value Engineer, you need expertise in cost analysis, process optimization, and engineering principles, usually backed by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with value analysis methodologies, CAD software, and project management tools is typically required, along with certifications like CVS (Certified Value Specialist) being beneficial. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and collaboration skills help value engineers lead multidisciplinary teams and drive consensus on cost-saving initiatives. These skills are crucial for maximizing product value, reducing costs, and ensuring project success without compromising quality.

Job description

Lead High-Impact Projects. Build Elite Teams. Drive Innovation.

Why This Role Matters

Gaylor Electric is looking for an Engineering Operations Manager to lead one of the most critical parts of our business—how projects are designed, coordinated, and brought to life in the field.

This is not a back-office engineering role. You’ll sit at the center of operations, influencing how projects are executed from preconstruction through installation—leading teams, driving strategy, and ensuring our designs are not only accurate, but buildable, efficient, and competitive.

You’ll work on high-profile, complex projects ($1M–$600M) across mission critical, manufacturing, healthcare, and large-scale commercial construction—partnering directly with operations, field leadership, and clients to make them successful.

What You’ll Own

Build & Lead a High-Performance Engineering Team

  • Lead, mentor, and elevate a team of Design Engineers and Virtual Designers
  • Shape the structure, performance, and future of your team
  • Drive recruiting, onboarding, and development of top-tier talent
  • Create a culture built on accountability, ownership, and continuous improvement

Drive Project Success from Day One

  • Own engineering execution across multiple projects during preconstruction and design
  • Ensure designs are constructible, coordinated, and aligned with field execution
  • Be the technical leader teams rely on for solving complex electrical challenges
  • Keep projects moving—on schedule, within budget, and aligned with client expectations

Lead the Future of Electrical Design (BIM & Virtual Design)

  • Drive how BIM and Virtual Design are used across projects—not just adoption, but excellence
  • Lead coordination with GCs, architects, and trade partners to solve real-world install challenges
  • Oversee the delivery of installation-ready drawings and coordinated models
  • Push innovation, standardization, and smarter ways to design and build

Partner with Operations & Clients

  • Be the bridge between engineering, field operations, and customers
  • Influence strategy, solve problems early, and keep teams aligned
  • Lead design conversations in meetings and represent engineering at a high level
  • Provide ongoing technical support to field teams throughout the project lifecycle

Impact the Business

  • Influence cost, schedule, and quality through smarter design decisions
  • Identify value engineering opportunities that drive competitiveness
  • Review scopes, contracts, and specs to reduce risk and improve execution
  • Play a key role in hitting regional performance and delivery targets

What Sets You Up to Win

Experience

  • Background in electrical construction, engineering, or VDC/BIM leadership
  • Experience leading teams within an electrical contractor or similar environment
  • Strong understanding of constructability—not just design theory
  • Experience supporting Design-Build, Design Assist, or Plan/Spec work

Technical Foundation

  • Solid understanding of NEC and working knowledge of major building codes
  • Hands-on experience with tools like Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD, and Autodesk Construction Cloud
  • Ability to lead design reviews, coordination efforts, and technical discussions

Leadership Mindset

  • You build teams, not just manage them
  • You’re proactive, solutions-oriented, and comfortable making decisions
  • You can communicate clearly with executives, field leaders, and clients
  • You take ownership of outcomes—not just tasks

Preferred Background

  • 10+ years in electrical construction, engineering, or coordination
  • Experience in Mission Critical or other complex construction environments
  • Background as a Superintendent, MEP Coordinator, or Electrical Supervisor
  • Journeyman Electrician license (a plus, not required)
