As a Roll Shop Operator, you will play a key role in supporting production by preparing, assembling, disassembling, and re-machining mill tooling and stands. This hands-on, mechanically inclined role offers a structured skill-based pathway with opportunities to advance to Level III and potentially transition into Millwright roles.
Your Day-to-Day Impact
You'll play a vital role in our Roll Shop team by:
  • Operating CNC lathes and mills to re-machine rolls and tooling.
  • Disassembling and assembling roll stands, gearboxes, and hydraulic components.
  • Performing mechanical rebuilds including bearing changes, hydraulic fitting replacements, and gearbox maintenance.
  • Using hand and specialty tools (e.g., screwdrivers, wrenches, micrometers, calipers) to complete tasks with precision.
  • Torch cutting and minor welding as needed.
  • Cleaning, prepping, and maintaining tooling and work areas (5S standards).
  • Accurately documenting measurements, diameters, and quality data per shop requirements.
  • Communicating tooling issues or quality excursions to the mill team.
  • Rotating through up to 7 different positions within the shop, gaining cross-functional experience.
  • Participating in continuous improvement and safety initiatives.
  • Supporting contractors (primarily millwrights) and collaborating closely with maintenance teams.

What You Bring
We're looking for candidates who are sharp, safety-focused, and ready to roll up their sleeves:
  • High School Diploma or GED (required)
  • General mechanical aptitude and familiarity with machine shop environments.
  • Experience with CNC lathe operations and basic programming preferred.
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings and follow SOPs.
  • Proficient in using measurement tools (micrometers, calipers, dial indicators).
  • Comfortable with hydraulic systems, bolts, fittings, and mechanical assemblies.
  • Basic math skills including fractions, decimals, and unit conversions.
  • Ability to operate overhead cranes, jib cranes, and motorized vehicles.
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to train and grow within the role.
  • Technical degree or Machinist certification preferred.
  • Candidates who do not pass the maintenance assessment may still be considered for production roles.
