What Is a Validation Engineer?

A validation engineer is responsible for testing equipment and electrical systems used in the manufacturing process. As a validation engineer, your primary duty is to work with the other members of the validation team to ensure that these systems measure up to company and industry standards. Skills needed for a validation engineer job include the ability to accurately test, measure, and calibrate manufacturing equipment for maximum efficiency and quality.

What is the difference between Validation Engineer vs Quality Assurance Engineer?

AspectValidation EngineerQuality Assurance Engineer
CertificationsGMP, ISO, Six SigmaISO, Six Sigma, CQA
Work EnvironmentRegulated industries like pharma, biotech, medical devicesManufacturing, software, and product development
Primary FocusEnsuring products meet specifications through validation processesPreventing defects through process and system improvements
Common UsageRegulatory compliance, validation protocolsProcess audits, quality systems

Validation Engineers focus on verifying that products and processes meet regulatory standards through validation protocols, especially in regulated industries. Quality Assurance Engineers concentrate on maintaining overall product quality by implementing and auditing quality systems. While both roles aim to ensure product safety and efficacy, Validation Engineers are more involved in validation activities, whereas QA Engineers focus on process improvement and defect prevention.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Validation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Validation Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance, typically backed by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with validation protocols, statistical analysis tools, and industry-specific regulations such as FDA, GMP, or ISO standards is essential. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure that products and processes meet stringent quality and safety standards, minimizing risks and ensuring regulatory approval.

What are some common challenges Validation Engineers face when working cross-functionally with other departments?

Validation Engineers frequently collaborate with teams such as manufacturing, quality assurance, and research & development. One common challenge is aligning differing priorities and timelines between departments, which can sometimes delay validation projects. Effective communication skills and flexibility are crucial to navigating these cross-functional interactions, ensuring that all regulatory and quality requirements are met without hindering production schedules. Building strong working relationships and proactively addressing potential concerns can help Validation Engineers facilitate smoother project execution.

What are Validation Engineers?

Validation Engineers are professionals responsible for ensuring that systems, processes, or equipment meet regulatory standards and function as intended. They typically work in industries such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, manufacturing, and medical devices. Their duties involve creating validation protocols, conducting tests, analyzing data, and documenting results to ensure compliance with industry regulations and quality standards. Validation Engineers play a critical role in maintaining product safety and efficacy, as well as helping companies pass audits and inspections.

Job description

Team Red Dog is hiring a Senior Silicon Validation Engineer for our client, a leading cloud and software provider and Fortune 50 technology leader. This role offers the opportunity to work on next-generation compute SoCs that power large-scale cloud infrastructure, contributing directly to the validation, testing, debugging, and performance of cutting-edge silicon platforms. The engineer will execute and maintain system-level validation regressions, investigate complex hardware and firmware issues, and collaborate across engineering teams to ensure platform readiness. This is an ideal opportunity for candidates with deep silicon validation expertise, PCIe and CXL experience, and a passion for solving challenging system-level engineering problems.

Top Required Skills (Must Haves):

  1. Silicon Validation Engineering (3+ years) – Hands-on experience executing, maintaining, and debugging silicon validation test plans, regressions, and system-level validation activities for CPU, SoC, or platform technologies.
  2. PCIe, CXL, IO, and Endpoint Validation (3+ years) – Strong understanding of high-speed interfaces, networking and storage endpoints, protocol validation, debugging, and performance analysis.
  3. Electrical Validation and Debug (3+ years) – Experience validating SerDes and IO technologies using hardware debug tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, JTAG, BERT, and related equipment.
  4. Python, C, and C++ Development – Ability to develop scripts, automation, diagnostics, and validation tools to support testing, triage, and analysis activities.

Opportunity Overview:

Join a team responsible for validating the state-of-the-art compute silicon that powers modern cloud infrastructure. This role places you at the intersection of hardware, firmware, and software, where you will investigate complex system interactions, validate critical platform functionality, and help ensure the reliability and performance of next-generation technologies before they reach production. Engineers in this group gain exposure to advanced SoC architectures, high-speed interfaces, and large-scale validation environments while working alongside some of the industry's leading silicon experts.

How you will make an impact:
• Develop and execute validation test plans for SoC features, subsystems, and platform functionality.
• Run, maintain, and analyze silicon system regressions in a lab environment.
• Perform functional, stress, performance, and system-level validation testing.
• Investigate, isolate, and debug hardware, firmware, and software issues.
• Validate PCIe, CXL, IO, networking, storage, and power management functionality.
• Review and verify system updates delivered by partner engineering teams.
• Analyze test data and communicate findings to stakeholders and development teams.
• Utilize industry-standard debug tools to troubleshoot complex platform issues.
• Create and maintain scripts, diagnostics, and automation to improve validation efficiency.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure product quality and readiness.

The expertise you bring:
• Bachelor's or master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
• 3+ years of experience in silicon validation, testing, debugging, or related engineering disciplines.
• Strong knowledge of PCIe, CXL, IO, networking endpoints, storage endpoints, and system-level validation.
• Experience validating SerDes and other high-speed IO technologies.
• Understanding of computer architecture, CPU validation, SoC validation, and platform-level functionality.
• Experience with BIOS, firmware development, debugging, and system software interactions.
• Proficiency in Python, C, and C++ development.
• Working knowledge of Verilog.
• Experience with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, JTAG, BERT, and related hardware debug tools.
• Ability to read and understand board-level schematics.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
• Ability to work onsite five days per week in a lab environment in Hillsboro, Oregon.

What makes a candidate highly successful in this role:

Successful candidates bring a strong combination of silicon validation expertise, deep technical curiosity, and hands-on debugging skills. They understand how high-speed interfaces such as PCIe, CXL, and SerDes interact across the SoC, platform, firmware, and software stack, enabling them to quickly identify root causes and drive complex issues to resolution. Engineers who thrive in this environment are highly self-directed, comfortable working with ambiguity, and capable of translating test results into meaningful engineering insights that improve product quality and reliability.
