This position performs a variety of activities and equipment operation in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of city water and sewer facilities and systems. On-call assignments are required.
Utility Technician I: Entry level position.
Utility Technician II: Journey level position.
Utility Technician III: Journey level position.
Utility Technician IV: Senior level position.
JOB SUMMARY
Inspects, repairs, and conducts preventative maintenance on water and sewer facilities and systems including water distribution mains, valves, hydrants, water meters, head gates, reservoirs, manholes, wastewater collection lines, and other appurtenances.
Test, disassemble, clean and repair commercial and residential water meters; sand blast and replace worn or faulty parts.
Maintain a variety of records relating to inspection, prevention, maintenance, and work activities.
Responds to customer complaints and inquiries; responds to water main breaks and sewer backups and water pressure loss. Notify affected residences and businesses when services are interrupted.
Identify equipment and material needs for each assigned project. Maintain an inventory of parts, tools, materials, and equipment used.
Performs required labor involved in pavement cutting, digging, repairing and backfilling.
Install, repair, and replace manholes, fire hydrants, valves, meters and meter vaults and boxes; Utility Technician II/III/IV: exercise valves according to prescribed schedules.
Locates city owned water, sewer, storm and telecommunication lines.
Remove and apply paint to water and wastewater facilities and equipment. Weld and fabricate tools, equipment, plumbing parts, and vault lids using arc and gas welding equipment.
Rotating on-call duty as assigned.
Other duties as assigned.
Additional Duties
Utility Technician III/IV
Install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of construction and repair activities, direct and control traffic around work sites. Act as traffic control tech in conformance with MUTCD.
Utility Technician III
Acts as crew lead as assigned and in the absence of the Utilities Supervisor.
Acts as ORC (Operator in Responsible Charge) as assigned.
Utility Technician IV
Acts as ORC (Operator in Responsible Charge) as assigned. Responsible for supervision of confined space and trenching activities.
QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or general education diploma (GED). Must possess basic computer skills necessary to meet the requirements of the position.
Utility Technician I
Previous water or wastewater experience preferred.
Utility Technician II
Minimum 2 years' experience working in water or wastewater and/or heavy construction. Minimum Utility Technician I experience or similar from other entity.
Proficiency in at least four (4) of the following skills:
Water Meter Operations & Maintenance, Fire Hydrant Operations & Maintenance, Water Valve Operations & Maintenance, Water & Sanitary Sewer Main Repair, Pump Station Inspection/Maintenance, Water Tank Operations & Maintenance, Sanitary Sewer Manhole Operations & Maintenance, Sanitary Sewer Main Operations & Maintenance (jetting), Sanitary Sewer Main Camera Operation, Utility Locates, Reservoir & Tunnel Operations & Maintenance.
Utility Technician III
Minimum 3 years' experience working in water or wastewater and/or heavy construction. Minimum Utility Technician II experience or similar from other entity.
Proficiency in at least seven (7) of the following skills:

Utility Technician IV

Valid Class A or B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements, or ability to obtain within 120 days of hire.

Utility Technician II
Valid Class A or B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements required.
Level II State of Colorado Wastewater Collection and Water Distribution Certificates.
Confined Space, Excavation Safety, and Flagger Certifications.
Utility Technician III
Valid Class A or B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements required.
Level III State of Colorado Wastewater Collections and Water Distribution Certificates.
