Job description

Title: BESS Maintenance Specialist- Solar 
Company: Tampa Electric Company 
State and City: Florida - Mulberry
Shift: 8 Hr. X 5 Days

POSITION CONCEPT

The Maintenance Specialist - Battery & Energy Storage System (BESS) is primary focused on supporting the development, implementation and administering an industry best practice approach to cost effectively achieving the highest level of performance from Tampa Electric’s commercial and utility scale BESS facilities and provide maintenance support for the other Solar facilities. Responsible for supporting, tracking, leading effective inspection, monitoring, environmental compliance, and preventative maintenance (PM) programs for Tampa Electric’s Battery & Energy Storage System (BESS) with support for the solar facilities. Responsible for the maintenance of a reliability predictive modeling tool for these facilities. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead responsible for troubleshooting and making necessary repairs to commercial and utility scale BESS system equipment. Perform and document all PM strategies. Support all areas of commercial & utility scale BESS facilities, BESS fire detection and suppression systems, solar facilities, and collector station design/equipment specification review; health, criticality, and risk assessments; inspection, monitoring, and testing strategies; performance; safety; environmental and maintenance requirements. Including contractor support and documentation as set forth in the Contractor Safety Management Program (CSMP) 
  • Participate in BESS system startup and commissioning planning (scoped single line diagrams, develop check-out database, conceptual system testing plans. Assist construction supervision with Quality control – ensure the construction is performed as per the design and if field changes are required, they meet or exceed TEC standards.  Ensure test procedures are followed and documented. 
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and maintenance of a comprehensive data collection and predictive modeling tool for commercial & utility scale BESS facilities to optimize performance, safety, protection of the equipment and optimize O&M costs. 
  • Assist with the tracking, analyzing, and reporting of reliability metrics for commercial & utility scale battery energy storage facilities. 
  • Assist in the facilitation of system root cause analysis for commercial & utility scale BESS facilities, solar facilities. Assist in facilitation and tracking of resulting action plans to maintain appropriate system performance. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the BESS Engineer or performance coach.

EDUCATION:

Required: High School Diploma or equivalent. Commercial &/Or Utility BESS training.

Preferred: Associate’s degree in electrical engineering technology, Electronics Engineering Technology, or related from an accredited university.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

Preferred: Certification in BESS systems or equipment. 

EXPERIENCE:

Required: Minimum of 5 years of work experience related to the Duties & Responsibilities of this position is required. Related experience consists of: Maintenance of Commercial &/or utility scale BESS Systems, Electrical System Technologies, and implementation.

College degree may be considered in lieu of equivalent experience of 2 years with an Associate’s degree and 3 years with a Bachelor’s degree.

Preferred: 5 years of related experience associated with utility scale BESS Systems, Electrical System Technologies, and Utility scale solar.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Required: A sound understanding of commercial & utility scale BESS & Solar power generation, medium voltage systems, transmission, distribution or substation principals, materials and their applications; Working knowledge of  reliability centered maintenance practices, continuous improvement practices and power generation practices used in electric utilities; Working knowledge of work management systems in power generation;  Ability to organize, lead and resolve technical and process problems;  Good project management skills, time management skills and communication skills.       

Preferred:  Working knowledge with utility scale BESS Systems, Solar Tracking Systems and Arrays. Working knowledge with Distributed Controls Systems. Working knowledge using SharePoint and other Web development/maintenance skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be able to work indoors/outdoors, irregular hours, overtime, and possible holidays.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ REQUIREMENTS 

Must be able to work in dusty and hot environments.  Must be able to ascend and descend from ladders and stairs.  Walking (sometimes on uneven surfaces), bending and driving as needed.
