What is a utility designer?

Utility Designers are professionals who plan and design the infrastructure for public utilities, such as electricity, water, gas, and telecommunications. They create detailed technical drawings and layouts for utility lines and systems, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and engineering standards. Utility Designers often collaborate with engineers, surveyors, and construction teams to bring utility projects from concept to completion. Their work is essential for both new developments and upgrades to existing utility networks.

How does a utility designer typically collaborate with engineers and field crews during a project?

Utility Designers play a crucial role in bridging the gap between engineering teams and field crews. They work closely with engineers to interpret technical requirements and ensure that design plans meet regulatory and safety standards. During project implementation, Utility Designers often coordinate with field crews to address on-site challenges, clarify design details, and make adjustments as needed. This collaboration helps ensure that utility infrastructure—such as power lines, water systems, or telecommunications—are installed accurately and efficiently.

What is the difference between Utility Designer vs Utility Engineer?

Common Search/ComparisonUtility Designer vs Utility Engineer

Utility Designers focus on planning and designing utility systems, ensuring they meet project specifications. Utility Engineers are more involved in implementing, testing, and maintaining these systems. While both roles require engineering knowledge, Utility Engineers often hold professional licenses and work more on the operational side, whereas Utility Designers concentrate on the planning and design stages.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a utility designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Utility Designer, you need a solid background in civil engineering or a related field, along with proficiency in utility layout and design principles. Familiarity with CAD software, GIS systems, and relevant industry codes or certifications such as NCEES is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills set outstanding professionals apart in this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring accurate, safe, and efficient utility infrastructure design that meets regulatory and client standards.

This Opportunity

Participates in providing technical design, drafting, and CADD/BIM support for overhead transmission line, transmission structure, utility infrastructure, substation interconnection, and power delivery projects. Collaborates with engineers, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams to develop designs and specifications supporting planning, infrastructure, and technical services business lines. Responsibilities include generating detailed PLS-CADD, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and MicroStation-based designs, engineering drawings, and construction packages for projects of moderate scale and complexity. Produces accurate and concise design-phase deliverables including transmission line plan-and-profile drawings, structure spotting layouts, tower erection drawings, foundation plans, technical reports, design calculations, engineering memoranda, design manuals, 3D models, sections, details, specifications, material take-offs (MTOs), bills of materials (BOMs), and construction documents. Supports the development of designs for steel lattice towers, monopoles, guyed structures, transmission line upgrades, rebuilds, and greenfield utility projects. Ensures all work products comply with NESC requirements, utility standards, QA/QC procedures, client specifications, and industry best practices, delivering a high level of quality, constructability, reliability, safety, design accuracy, and functionality while meeting project schedules and budget objectives.

Your Impact

  • Collect, compile, and analyze data from field investigations, LiDAR and topographic surveys, GIS data, structural analyses, blueprints, schematics, engineering calculations, transmission line route studies, technical specifications, as-built drawings, rough sketches, and design documentation to support overhead transmission line, tower design, utility infrastructure, and power delivery projects.

  • Utilize 3D CADD/BIM software, including PLS-CADD, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, and ProjectWise, while collaborating with engineers to resolve design details, constructability concerns, and drawing discrepancies. Prepare highly accurate transmission line plan-and-profile drawings, tower assemblies, structure spotting layouts, foundation plans, and construction packages for projects of basic to moderate complexity.

  • Apply engineering and drafting standards to provide technical design support that ensures proper fit, form, function, constructability, maintainability, conductor clearances, sag and tension requirements, and quantity calculations in accordance with NESC, utility standards, and client specifications.

  • Verify the accuracy of engineering calculations, structure loading criteria, foundation layouts, design revisions, change orders, and construction packages, identifying and escalating discrepancies, design conflicts, constructability issues, or technical challenges involving steel lattice towers, monopoles, guyed structures, and transmission line facilities.

  • Collaborate with transmission engineering, structural engineering, civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, survey, environmental, permitting, and construction teams to support the successful execution of project deliverables and schedules.

  • Ensure designs comply with applicable local, state, federal, utility, NESC, environmental, and client-specific regulatory requirements, permitting standards, and engineering best practices.

  • Develop and maintain multiple design alternatives for engineer review, including tower configurations, route modifications, structure placement options, and constructability assessments.

  • Define and document project requirements related to dimensions, materials, equipment specifications, bills of materials (BOMs), material take-offs (MTOs), fabrication details, and construction procedures, ensuring compliance with project contracts, utility standards, and client expectations.

  • Work closely with the Engineer of Record (EOR), Lead Transmission Engineer, Project Manager, and multidisciplinary technical teams on project phases, interdisciplinary reviews, design checks, quality assurance reviews, and technical deliverables.

  • Apply engineering analysis techniques and specialized software to address moderately complex issues related to line routing, structure spotting, conductor clearances, loading criteria, transmission line upgrades, rebuild projects, and utility infrastructure design, while ensuring compliance with project standards and specifications.

  • Coordinate with clients, utilities, contractors, and construction personnel to schedule design reviews, support constructability discussions, address engineering comments, and facilitate the timely delivery of drafting and design support services.

  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

  • High School Diploma.
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant post education experience in discipline with prior drafting and design support experience.
  • Knowledge of drafting and design support principles, practices, process, methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Ability to make technical computations and calculations involving the application of geometry and mathematical concepts, understanding plans and specifications, and making factual comparisons to the appropriate standards or regulations.
  • Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a technical and non-technical audience.
  • Competent self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
