Job description

RK&K is hiring a Utility Coordinator to work in our Fairfax, Richmond, or Virginia Beach, Virginia offices to provide utility relocation coordination services on a variety of state, local and regional projects. This position will report to the Manager, Utilities. Applicants must be familiar with regional providers of electric, gas, telecommunications, petroleum, water, and sewer utility services in the Virginia-Maryland-DC metropolitan area; must be familiar with VDOT procedures and preferences for coordination of utility relocations; and must be familiar with the application of those procedures and preferences to civil infrastructure projects.
Essential Functions
  • Assist with the interpretation of highway construction plans, drainage layouts, specifications to identify utility impacts
  • Schedule and conduct utility meetings with clients, utility owners and contractors
  • Prepare meeting agendas and minutes
  • Proficiently and professionally communicate technical information
  • Work closely with design professionals to optimize and minimize utility conflicts
  • Determine cost responsibility (prior rights) and assist utility owners with preparation of utility agreements, relocation plans, and relocation schedules
  • Assist with the preparation of environmental permit drawings and narratives
  • Attend field meetings and site investigations as required
  • Effectively plan, manage, and coordinate multiple work assignments
  • Use computer-aided drafting and design software to develop and produce drawings
  • Participate in project risk analysis and meetings to evaluate utility risks
  • Occasional overnight travel will be required
  • Ability to use personal vehicle on a reimbursement basis for business purposes

Required Skills and Experience
  • High school diploma
  • Minimum of three (3) years of Utility Coordination, Utility Relocation or similar experience
  • Knowledge of mathematics and experience in the application of engineering and construction standards, surveying, and utility locating.
  • Previous familiarity with environmental permitting, rights-of-way requirements, and safety standards and practices
  • Basic knowledge of MicroStation and/or AutoCAD
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite software -
  • Previous experience with VDOT RUMS (Roadway Utility Management System)/SHA Utility Manual, the Utility Conflict Matrix (UCM), utility conflict escalation and resolution, and Utility Risk Management (URM)
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Five (5) years of Utility Coordination, Utility Relocation or similar Experience
  • Advanced education in a technical discipline is desirable
