Job description

The Project Engineer V is responsible for leading the technical execution of electrical substation projects from project kickoff through delivery. This role applies advanced engineering expertise and independent judgment to develop technically sound, constructible, and code-compliant designs while serving as the primary technical owner of project scope, deliverable quality, and engineering decisions.

The Project Engineer V functions as the day-to-day technical lead, mentoring engineering staff, supporting Project Managers, interfacing directly with clients, and ensuring high-quality project delivery through proactive risk management and rigorous quality control practices.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead major portions of substation projects or independently execute small-to-medium projects from kickoff through delivery.
  • Serve as the technical lead and primary engineering point of contact for project coordination with Project Managers, clients, and internal teams.
  • Own the technical scope of work, including development and oversight of substation physical and protection & control design deliverables.
  • Prepare, review, and approve engineering drawings, calculations, studies, and bills of material.
  • Apply and enforce applicable codes and standards (NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, ANSI) to ensure compliant and constructible designs.
  • Identify project risks, design conflicts, and scope impacts; determine appropriate resolution and escalation.
  • Perform and oversee engineering analyses, including grounding, fault current, voltage drop, and related studies.
  • Conduct QA/QC reviews of calculations, drawings, and design packages prior to issuance; serve as Engineer of Record when licensed.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to Engineer I-IV staff, including design reviews and development feedback.
  • Communicate project status, technical issues, and risks clearly to internal stakeholders and clients.
  • Maintain day-to-day client engineering relationships.
  • Support client satisfaction and repeat business through consistent, high-quality technical delivery and communication.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation and records.
  • Travel as required for project coordination, site visits, or client meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
  • 7-10 years of experience in electrical substation engineering or related power systems design.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical execution of projects with minimal oversight.
  • Advanced knowledge of substation design principles, standards, and engineering practices.
  • Strong engineering judgment, including the ability to assess risk and make sound technical decisions.
  • Proven experience performing and reviewing complex engineering calculations and design packages.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments, priorities, and project deliverables effectively.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and relevant engineering design tools.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, or ability to obtain licensure.
  • Expertise in medium- and high-voltage substation systems for utility or industrial clients.
  • Advanced proficiency with substation design and analysis software (e.g., grounding analysis tools such as SES-CDEGS).
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring and developing junior engineering staff.
  • Experience leading client-facing technical discussions and design reviews.
