OVERALL DESCRIPTION
As a Wayfinding Coordinator (UI/UX Design) on SEPTA's Customer Experience Design team, you will help shape how millions of riders interact with transit through intuitive, accessible, and customer-centered digital experiences. Your work will improve how customers plan trips, navigate transit, and receive real-time service information on web, mobile, and station and on-board digital screens.
Reporting to SEPTA's Manager of Wayfinding, your work will help lead SEPTA's digital customer experience transformation, as SEPTA moves to become a best-in-class mobility provider. As SEPTA introduces new rail vehicles, advances the rollout of real-time customer communications, and begins the "Key 2.0" fare payment system modernization, you will design and enhance user interfaces, customer information systems, and digital wayfinding tools that make transit easier to understand and use. While your primary focus will be digital products, you will collaborate closely with colleagues responsible for maps, signage, and environmental graphic design to curate a seamless journey across physical and digital touchpoints. You will be supported by industry-leading colleagues while applying SEPTA's design standards, accessibility requirements, and brand identity across every project.
You'll have the opportunity to learn from customers in stations and on vehicles, conduct user research, prototype and test new digital experiences, and translate real-world rider behavior into thoughtful, data-informed design solutions. Working alongside product managers, developers, communications professionals, and operations staff, you'll see your ideas evolve from concept through implementation, helping improve the daily experience of hundreds of thousands of riders.
Ideal candidates will have 3-5 years of professional experience in UI/UX, product design, interaction design, or digital experience design, with demonstrated expertise in user research, wireframing, prototyping, accessibility, and modern design systems. Experience designing for complex public-facing services, transportation, civic technology, or other large-scale customer experience environments is required.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Leads coordination of projects for service information design content that supports web, mobile app, and digital screens on vehicles and stations.
  2. Collaborates with Information Technology as a Subject Matter Expert on the user interface (UI) design of SEPTA's website, mobile app, and audio/visual passenger information system (AVPA) screens. Provides high-fidelity prototypes, graphic assets/files, and specifications for front-end development.
  3. Performs quality control/user testing on the website/app before launch for consistency with the SEPTA's brand, ADA compliance, and User Experience/User Interface (UX/UI) best practices.
  4. Demonstrates leadership in upholding and enforcing all Authority and departmental safety and security policies and procedures, as well as all applicable job safety responsibilities. Immediately reports any safety concerns, compromises or hazards affecting operations, yourself and/or other employees. Responsible for personal safety and champions the safety of others.
  5. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design, User Interface, or User Experience Design, or a related field. Minimum of three (3) years of related experience creating digital UI/UX documentation required. Graduate degree may substitute for one (1) year of experience.
  • An understanding of the principles of transit planning and/or operations preferred.
  • Must demonstrate an ability to communicate complex information simply.
  • Project Management Skills - Must take initiative, take feedback well, and continually adapt to changing requirements.
  • Must possess excellent design, presentation, and organizational skills; be able to handle multiple assignments and meet quick deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills required. Position requires interface with multiple internal departments and external organizations, and preparation of technical reports, guidelines, and verbal presentations.
  • Advanced knowledge preparing UI/UX documentation and specifying design requirements for developers in Figma required.
  • Understanding of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) standards for digital experiences required.
  • Advanced Technology skills working in Adobe Creative Suite including but not limited to: Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, Bridge, and Dreamweaver required on Mac and PC.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite Skills Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams) preferred.
