Job description

Hallmark Hyundai Birmingham is seeking an experienced, driven, and highly retail-focused Used Car Manager to lead our pre-owned vehicle department. This is a key leadership position responsible for growing used vehicle sales volume, maximizing used-car profitability, maintaining a diverse and marketable inventory, and ensuring vehicles are properly reconditioned and retail-ready.

We are looking for a hands-on automotive professional who understands that a successful used-car operation starts with the right inventory and ends with an exceptional retail experience. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of used car management, inventory acquisition, appraisal, merchandising, pricing, reconditioning, and sales performance.

If you are a competitive automotive leader who knows how to buy the right cars, price them correctly, get them frontline-ready quickly, and turn inventory efficiently, we want to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities

Drive Used Vehicle Sales Volume

  • Develop and execute strategies to consistently increase used vehicle sales volume and market share.
  • Lead the used-car department with a strong retail-first mentality.
  • Monitor sales performance, inventory levels, days supply, turn rate, gross profit, pricing, and market position.
  • Work closely with the General Manager, General Sales Manager, and sales team to maximize opportunities and achieve dealership objectives.
  • Establish clear goals and accountability for used vehicle sales performance.
  • Identify opportunities to increase traffic, leads, appointments, showroom visits, and closing ratios.

Build and Maintain a Diverse Used-Car Inventory

  • Maintain a diverse, competitive, and highly marketable used vehicle inventory.
  • Evaluate inventory needs based on current market demand, customer demographics, sales history, and local competition.
  • Source quality pre-owned vehicles through trade-ins, dealer trades, auctions, off-lease vehicles, direct purchases, and other acquisition channels.
  • Appraise trade-ins accurately while balancing acquisition cost, market value, reconditioning requirements, and potential retail profitability.
  • Maintain the appropriate mix of makes, models, price points, vehicle types, mileage ranges, and fuel types to appeal to a broad customer base.
  • Continuously evaluate aging inventory and take decisive action to maintain healthy inventory turn.

Reconditioning & Frontline Readiness

  • Own the used vehicle reconditioning process from acquisition through retail delivery.
  • Establish and maintain efficient processes to move vehicles through mechanical, cosmetic, detail, and safety inspections.
  • Work closely with the service department, detail department, body shop, and outside vendors to minimize reconditioning time and expense.
  • Ensure every used vehicle is retail-ready, professionally presented, mechanically sound, and properly merchandised.
  • Monitor reconditioning costs and turnaround time while maintaining high quality standards.
  • Reduce unnecessary days-to-market and maximize the number of vehicles available for sale.

Retail Merchandising & Pricing

  • Ensure every used vehicle is competitively priced and positioned for the current market.
  • Monitor online automotive marketplaces, competitive dealers, vehicle pricing, market days supply, and market-based pricing data.
  • Ensure used inventory receives professional photography, accurate descriptions, complete equipment information, and compelling online merchandising.
  • Maintain a strong digital retail presence across dealership websites and third-party automotive marketplaces.
  • Make timely pricing and merchandising adjustments based on market performance.
  • Ensure aged units receive immediate attention and appropriate action.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead, coach, and hold the used-car team accountable for performance.
  • Develop a culture centered around volume, accountability, speed, customer satisfaction, and profitability.
  • Train and mentor sales staff on used vehicle knowledge, features, benefits, competitive positioning, and effective presentation.
  • Work collaboratively with sales, service, parts, detail, accounting, and management teams.
  • Lead by example and maintain a professional, energetic, results-oriented environment.

What We're Looking For

The ideal Used Car Manager will have:

  • Previous experience as a Used Car Manager, Pre-Owned Manager, Inventory Manager, Sales Manager, or Automotive Management professional.
  • A proven record of increasing used vehicle sales volume and inventory turn.
  • Strong knowledge of used vehicle appraisals, auctions, inventory acquisition, pricing, reconditioning, and retail merchandising.
  • A deep understanding of the pre-owned automotive market and current consumer buying trends.
  • Strong negotiation and analytical skills.
  • The ability to make quick, informed decisions based on market data.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • A strong understanding of automotive dealership operations and CRM/inventory management systems.
  • A competitive, entrepreneurial mindset with a strong sense of urgency.
  • A commitment to delivering an outstanding customer experience.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who thinks like an owner of the used-car operation.

You understand that selling more used cars isn't accomplished simply by acquiring more inventory. It requires having the right inventory, at the right price, reconditioned quickly, merchandised properly, and presented to the customer as an exceptional value.

You are comfortable looking at an aging unit and making a decision. You know when to invest in a vehicle, when to adjust the price, when to wholesale it, and when to pursue a different acquisition strategy. You understand turn, gross, market-based pricing, days supply, acquisition cost, recon cost, and total inventory investment—but you never lose sight of the ultimate goal: retailing more vehicles to more customers.

Why Join Hallmark Hyundai Birmingham?

At Hallmark Hyundai Birmingham, you will have the opportunity to take ownership of a critical part of our dealership's growth strategy. We are looking for a leader who wants to build a high-volume, highly organized, retail-focused used vehicle operation and make a measurable impact on dealership performance.

This is an opportunity for an experienced automotive manager who wants the authority and accountability to build inventory, improve processes, increase used-car sales, develop people, and drive results.
