What does a usability analyst do?

A usability analyst evaluates how users interact with products or systems to identify areas for improvement. They conduct user testing, analyze feedback, and recommend design changes to enhance user experience, often using tools like surveys, heatmaps, and analytics software.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a usability analyst?

To excel as a Usability Analyst, you need a solid understanding of user experience (UX) principles, research methodologies, and typically a degree in human-computer interaction, psychology, or a related field. Familiarity with usability testing tools such as UserTesting, Morae, or Optimal Workshop, and experience with wireframing or prototyping software like Sketch or Figma, are highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, communication skills, and empathy are essential soft skills to effectively interpret user data and advocate for user needs. These skills and tools are crucial for identifying usability issues and ensuring products are intuitive, accessible, and user-friendly.

How does a usability analyst typically collaborate with designers and developers during a project?

Usability Analysts frequently work alongside designers and developers throughout the project lifecycle to ensure the end product is user-friendly and meets accessibility standards. They often participate in design reviews, provide feedback based on user research, and help interpret usability testing results for the team. Clear communication and documentation of user issues are crucial, as analysts must effectively advocate for necessary changes. This collaborative approach helps ensure that user needs are integrated into design and development decisions from the early stages through to final implementation.
