What is an untenured professor?

Untenured professors are faculty members at a college or university who have not yet received tenure, which is a permanent and secure academic appointment. These professors are usually on a probationary period, during which their teaching, research, and service are evaluated. Achieving tenure typically involves a rigorous review process, and until then, untenured professors often work under fixed-term contracts. Their position can be less secure compared to tenured faculty, and they may face higher expectations to publish research and demonstrate excellence in their field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an untenured professor?

To thrive as an Untenured Professor, you need a doctoral degree in your field, a strong record of research and publications, and effective teaching abilities. Familiarity with academic publishing platforms, learning management systems (such as Canvas or Blackboard), and grant application processes is essential. Outstanding communication, time management, and networking skills help you build academic collaborations and mentor students effectively. These skills and qualities are crucial for achieving tenure, advancing research, and contributing meaningfully to your academic community.

What are some common challenges faced by untenured professors during the tenure-track period?

Untenured professors often face the challenge of balancing high teaching loads, rigorous research expectations, and service commitments, all while working towards meeting tenure requirements. The pressure to publish regularly in reputable journals and secure research funding can be intense, especially when combined with mentoring students and participating in departmental activities. Time management and setting clear priorities are essential for success, as is seeking mentorship from senior colleagues. Supportive work environments and collaboration with peers can help mitigate some of these challenges and contribute to professional growth.

The main difference lies in employment status and tenure prospects, with Assistant Professors often on the path to tenure.

Can you be a professor without tenure?

Untenured professors are faculty members who have not yet achieved tenure, which is a permanent appointment that provides job security. Many professors start their careers as untenured, often on fixed-term or tenure-track contracts, and can remain in such positions without obtaining tenure. Tenure status depends on institutional policies, performance, and the completion of a review process.

Job description

The Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Stanford University invites applications for a tenure track faculty position at the Assistant, untenured Associate Professor, or tenured Associate Professor level.

Recent technology and capability advances in various areas of aerospace engineering are leading to a renaissance of the field, including concepts for future flight that hold promise for zero emission air transportation, new modalities for autonomous air transportation, artificial intelligence coupled with autonomous decision making for advanced robotics, and vastly improved capabilities for space access to deploy the next generation of space and exploration systems. The strategic and economic importance of safe, secure, and sustainable aviation and space systems is becoming recognized globally; achieving these goals requires a multidisciplinary approach involving research and development in multiple fields. To meet these challenges, we are seeking exceptional applicants who will develop a program of high-impact research, contribute to an innovative undergraduate curriculum, and develop graduate courses at the frontier of areas such as: aerodynamics and fluid mechanics; aerospace system design; autonomous aerospace vehicle technologies; novel fuel, storage, and propulsion systems for sustainable aviation; human and robotic exploration of space; and fundamental science and engineering in all aerospace disciplines. We will place higher priority on the impact, originality, and promise of the candidate’s work rather than on the particular area of specialization within Aeronautics and Astronautics.

In order to receive the best possible consideration, October 15, 2026, when the review of files will begin. To receive full consideration, applications must be submitted by October 31, 2026. Our search will remain open until November 30, 2026. If you have questions regarding this opening or require assistance with the online application system, aafacultysearch@stanford.edu.
