What are Unreal Engine and Unity?

Unreal Engine and Unity are two of the most popular game development engines used to create video games and interactive experiences. Unreal Engine, developed by Epic Games, is known for its high-end graphics capabilities and is widely used in AAA game development, simulations, and even film production. Unity, on the other hand, is celebrated for its user-friendly interface and versatility, making it a preferred choice for mobile games, indie developers, and cross-platform projects. Both engines offer powerful tools for 2D and 3D development, robust asset stores, and large supportive communities. Choosing between them often depends on the project's requirements, team experience, and target platforms.

How do Unreal Engine and Unity developers typically collaborate within a game development team?

Unreal Engine and Unity developers often work closely with artists, designers, and QA testers throughout the game development process. Collaboration is essential, especially when integrating assets, implementing gameplay mechanics, or troubleshooting cross-platform issues. Regular stand-up meetings, shared project management tools, and version control systems like Git are commonly used to keep everyone aligned. Developers may also participate in code reviews and pair programming sessions to maintain code quality and facilitate knowledge sharing within the team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Unreal Engine/Unity developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Unreal Engine/Unity Developer, you need strong programming skills (C++, C#), 3D mathematics, and knowledge of game development principles, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with the Unreal Engine and Unity platforms, version control systems like Git, and possibly certifications in these engines are typically required. Creativity, problem-solving, collaboration, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for excelling in multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualities are vital to deliver high-quality, interactive experiences efficiently in the competitive gaming and simulation industries.

What is the difference between Unreal Engine Developer and Unity Developer?

AspectUnreal Engine DeveloperUnity Developer
Required CredentialsTypically a degree in computer science, software engineering, or related field; certifications like Unreal Authorized Instructor are commonSimilar degrees; certifications like Unity Certified Developer are common
Work EnvironmentOften in AAA game studios, film, and visualization projects; high-performance hardwareWidely used in indie, mobile, and casual game development; versatile hardware requirements
Industry UsagePrimarily in gaming, film, and architectural visualizationGaming, AR/VR, mobile apps, and interactive media

Unreal Engine Developers focus on high-fidelity graphics and complex rendering, often in AAA titles and visualization projects, while Unity Developers excel in mobile, indie, and cross-platform development. Both roles require similar foundational skills but differ in project scope and industry focus.

Job description

Parra Consulting Group (PCG) is seeking a Front-End Software Developer -- Modeling & Simulation / HITL to develop modern software interfaces supporting modeling and simulation, hardware-in-the-loop (HITL), and advanced engineering environments for critical national security missions. This role builds intuitive applications that allow engineers and operators to configure systems, visualize complex data, control simulations, and interact with physical and simulated hardware. This position is located at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.

More About the Role

As a Front-End Software Developer, you'll design and implement user interfaces for engineering, simulation, and test applications. You'll work closely with modeling and simulation engineers, embedded developers, hardware engineers, and systems engineers to translate complex technical workflows into usable software. The ideal candidate combines strong modern front-end development skills with experience integrating applications with real-time data, simulation environments, or HITL systems.

Required Qualifications
  • Active TS/SCI security clearance.
  • Experience developing production-quality front-end applications using modern JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks such as React, Angular, Vue, or similar.
  • Strong proficiency with HTML, CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript, and modern web application architecture.
  • Experience integrating front-end applications with REST APIs, WebSockets, message-based interfaces, or other backend services.
  • Experience developing data-intensive interfaces, dashboards, visualization tools, or engineering applications.
  • Familiarity with software development practices including Git, automated testing, code review, and CI/CD.
  • Ability to work directly with engineers and technical users to translate complex system requirements into effective user interfaces.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience supporting modeling and simulation (M&S)
  • Experience developing software for hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) or software-in-the-loop (SITL)
  • Experience visualizing or interacting with real-time telemetry, sensor data, system state, or simulation outputs.
  • Familiarity with Python, C++, or other languages commonly used in engineering and simulation environments.
  • Experience with 2D/3D visualization, geospatial interfaces, plotting, or scientific visualization libraries.
  • Familiarity with simulation tools or frameworks such as MATLAB/Simulink, ROS/ROS 2, Unreal Engine, Unity, Gazebo, or similar.
  • Experience integrating software with unmanned systems, robotics, embedded systems, test equipment, or physical hardware.
  • Experience developing applications for aerospace, defense, autonomy, or other complex engineering environments.
Why Join PCG

Parra Consulting Group offers a collaborative, mission-focused environment where your expertise directly supports national security operations. PCG provides competitive compensation, 100% employer-paid medical/dental/vision coverage, life and disability insurance, and a PTO plan to ensure professional growth and work-life balance.
