Unreal Engine Level Designer information

What does an Unreal Engine level designer do?

An Unreal Engine Level Designer is responsible for creating and designing game environments using Epic Games' Unreal Engine. They craft immersive worlds by placing objects, setting up lighting, and scripting interactive elements to enhance player experience. Level designers work closely with artists, programmers, and other team members to ensure that the levels are visually appealing, engaging, and function smoothly within the game's mechanics. Their work involves both creative and technical skills, balancing aesthetics with gameplay functionality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Unreal Engine level designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Unreal Engine Level Designer, you need strong proficiency in level design principles, 3D modeling, and a deep understanding of Unreal Engine, often supported by a degree in game design or a related field. Familiarity with technical tools such as Unreal Engine's Blueprint system, asset management workflows, and version control systems like Perforce is essential. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and crafting engaging player experiences. These skills ensure that levels are not only visually compelling and functional but also optimized for gameplay and performance within complex development environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Unreal Engine level designers when collaborating with artists and programmers?

Unreal Engine Level Designers frequently need to balance creative vision with technical constraints, which can be challenging during cross-disciplinary collaboration. Communicating level design requirements clearly to artists helps ensure assets match gameplay needs, while close coordination with programmers is essential to optimize performance and implement interactive elements. Effective collaboration often involves regular meetings, detailed documentation, and iterative feedback to align everyone's contributions and deliver cohesive, high-quality levels on schedule.

Job description

Job Description
You are part of the visual engine of Sandlot. Client campaigns, social graphics, pitch decks, and print pieces run through you. This is not a background role; your work is client-facing, high-volume, and directly tied to the results we deliver.
You will collaborate closely with Social Media Managers, Account Managers, and leadership to bring campaigns to life across every medium. You receive creative briefs and translate them into sharp, on-brand visual work - fast. You know the difference between good enough and great, and you refuse to ship the former.
This role spans a wide range of work: social media graphics, digital ads, print, brand identity, presentations, and internal sales materials. You will also be expected to stay current on design trends, AI-powered design tools, and workflow efficiencies that keep our output ahead of the curve.
Key Responsibilities:
Digital & Social Creative
• Design social media graphics across all platforms (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn) that are platform-appropriate, on-brand, and scroll-stopping.
• Execute against creative briefs provided by Social Media Managers with clarity and speed.
• Produce digital ad creative for paid social and display campaigns.
• Design email headers, digital banners, and web-ready assets as needed.
Print & Campaign Design
• Design print materials including direct mail, brochures, menus, flyers, posters, and signage.
• Develop campaign visual systems that work across both digital and print formats.
• Prepare files for print production: proper specs, bleeds, color profiles, and vendor-ready exports.
Brand & Identity
• Maintain and apply client brand standards consistently across all deliverables.
• Support brand identity development and refresh projects as they arise.
• Build and maintain asset libraries so the team always has what it needs.
Presentations & Internal Materials
• Design pitch decks, proposal presentations, and client-facing reports.
• Create internal sales materials that help the client services team win business.
Process & Collaboration
• Work from creative briefs. If a brief is unclear, ask - don't guess.
• Manage multiple concurrent projects across clients without missing deadlines or dropping quality.
• Participate in creative brainstorms and bring visual thinking to campaign concepts.
• Identify and adopt AI design tools and workflow improvements that increase output quality and efficiency.
• Photo editing and retouching as required.
• Other duties as assigned - in a small agency, everyone is hands-on.
What Success Looks Like
• Client creative is always on-brand, on-deadline, and at a quality level that makes clients proud.
• Your work is consistent and high-quality across the full volume of accounts - not just the flagship clients.
• Social Media Managers and Account Managers rarely have to ask twice - your execution matches the brief.
• You proactively flag creative issues, bandwidth constraints, or brief gaps before they become problems.
• You are pushing Sandlot's creative standards forward, not just maintaining them.
• You are using modern tools and AI-powered workflows to work smarter, not just harder.
Requirements/Qualifications:
• 2+ years of professional graphic design experience, ideally in an agency or multi-client environment.
• Mastery of the Adobe Creative Suite: Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign are non-negotiable.
• Figma, Canva and Adobe Premiere/Final Cut are benefits but not required.
• A portfolio that demonstrates range: social, print, digital, brand. We want to see you can do it all.
• Strong understanding of design fundamentals: typography, color, layout, hierarchy.
• Experience designing for social media platforms and understanding platform-specific specs.
• Ability to take creative direction and feedback, adjust quickly, and not take it personally.
• Proficiency in Keynote and/or PowerPoint for presentation design.
• Photo editing skills and a good eye for retouching and image composition.
• Familiarity with AI-powered design tools (Adobe Firefly, Figma MCP, etc.) is a strong plus.
• Organized and reliable - you manage your own project queue and hit deadlines without being chased.
Location:
Will need to be available to work from the Sandlot + Co. office located in the River Market area in Kansas City.

Sandlot + Co. is a Kansas City-based marketing agency specializing in multi-location brands. We manage social media, creative, and marketing strategy for 40+ clients across 400+ locations nationwide.
At Sandlot, we hire, evaluate, promote, and part ways based on five core values that guide how we work. They are the baseline, not the aspiration:
Own It. Take responsibility. Step up before you're asked. Fix what's broken without waiting for permission.
Shoot Straight. Tell the truth clearly and respectfully. Direct feedback, no office politics, no gossip.
Stay Curious. Ask good questions. Adapt fast. Find better ways instead of defending the status quo.
Greater Good. Put clients and Sandlot ahead of ego, convenience, or comfort.
Drive Results. Focus on outcomes, not hours. Finish what you start. Measure success by impact.
We are a small team that punches above its weight. If you're looking for a highly accountable, performance-driven environment, you'll feel at home here. If you want ownership, impact, and a team that actually means what they say about standards, please apply!
