Job description

SUMMARY

The Senior Accountant performs a variety of accounting duties involving the calculation, posting, monitoring, reconciliation, processing, and verification of financial data to maintain the accuracy and integrity of the University's accounting records. This position supports financial reporting, month-end and year-end close activities, and assists in ensuring compliance with University policies and accounting standards.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepares journal entries, bank reconciliations, accruals, reclassifications, month-end and year-end closing activities, and audit schedules.
  • Reconciles various expenditure reports to source documents; distributes and maintains financial documents and reports.
  • Prepares and posts financial transactions; reconciles entries and internal ledgers to financial reporting system reports, researching and resolving discrepancies as needed.
  • Researches processing issues, communicates with departments and vendors to resolve discrepancies and expedite payments, responds to inquiries by telephone or in writing, and refers complex issues for resolution when appropriate.
  • Analyzes ADP worksheets to prepare payroll-related journal entries for the University's ERP system.
  • Reconciles various general ledger accounts and prepares adjusting and audit entries.
  • Maintains spreadsheets and supporting schedules to facilitate ERP transactions and financial reporting.
  • Assists with audit preparation by compiling supporting documentation and responding to requests.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties and special projects as assigned.


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
  • Two (2) to four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in accounting or financial management.
  • Higher education accounting experience preferred.


OTHER REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to prepare administrative and financial documentation.
  • Basic data entry and word processing skills.
  • Knowledge of payroll policies and procedures.
  • Ability to analyze, reconcile, and verify financial data with accuracy.
  • Knowledge of university accounting procedures involving procurement, travel, and/or employment.
  • Knowledge of university invoicing procedures.
  • Working knowledge of accounting principles and practices.
  • Records maintenance and account reconciliation skills.
  • Ability to use personal computers, spreadsheets, word processing software, and automated accounting systems.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work is performed within the general range of a standard office environment.
