What is a union?

A union is an organized group of workers who come together to collectively negotiate with employers over wages, benefits, working conditions, and other employment-related matters. Unions represent their members in discussions with management to secure better terms and protect workers' rights. By joining together, workers can increase their bargaining power and have a stronger voice in the workplace.

What is a union job?

A union job can refer to two separate types of jobs. One is jobs that support the structure of the union, such as research, organizing, and administration. The other is any job that is represented by a union. If you work for a union, you generally provide support and resources to your union members, such as helping to negotiate collective bargaining agreements with the management of a specific employer. If you work in a union, your duties and responsibilities are contingent on the type of work you do.

What are some common challenges faced by union representatives in balancing member advocacy with employer negotiations?

Union representatives often navigate the challenge of effectively advocating for members’ interests while maintaining constructive relationships with employers. Striking a balance between assertively addressing member concerns—such as fair wages, workplace safety, and job security—and fostering open, solution-oriented dialogue with management is essential. Representatives must also ensure transparent communication with union members, manage expectations, and stay updated on labor laws and contracts. These tasks require strong negotiation, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a union representative, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Union Representative, you need a strong understanding of labor laws, collective bargaining processes, and negotiation techniques, often backed by relevant experience or training in labor relations. Familiarity with grievance management systems, contract databases, and legal research tools is typically required. Outstanding communication, conflict resolution, and advocacy skills help a representative effectively support members and foster positive relationships. These skills ensure the Union can protect workers' rights, negotiate fair agreements, and address workplace issues efficiently.

Job description

About Crimson Oak Strategies

Crimson Oak Strategies is a compliance consulting firm dedicated to serving credit unions across the

country. We partner with our clients to deliver policy development, regulatory guidance, and expert

compliance support tailored to the credit union industry. Our team helps credit unions navigate complex

regulatory environments with confidence and clarity.

Position Summary

We are seeking a seasoned credit union compliance professional to join our team as a Policy &

Compliance Advisor on a part-time basis. This role is centered on policy review and manual development, compliance research, regulatory updates, client compliance questions, compliance training, marketing reviews, compliance-related audits, and other compliance projects. It is ideal for an experienced compliance officer who wants meaningful, substantive work on a flexible, reduced schedule and who brings deep, hands-on credit union compliance expertise to every deliverable.

This is not an entry-level role. The successful candidate will have spent 3-5 years working in credit union

compliance and will be able to step in, review policies, build out policy manuals, and answer nuanced

regulatory questions with minimal ramp-up.

Key Responsibilities

• Policy Review: Review, analyze, and revise credit union client policies to ensure alignment with current NCUA regulations, examiner guidance, consumer compliance requirements, and industry best practices.

• Policy Manual Development: Build out complete policy manuals for credit union clients, including restructuring existing policies, combining related policies for clarity and efficiency, recommending outdated or redundant policies for sunset, and ensuring all required policies are included in the manual.

• Policy Review Schedules: Develop and maintain policy review schedules for clients to ensure every policy is reviewed on an appropriate cadence and that reviews are documented for examiner and audit purposes.

• Compliance Research: Conduct thorough research on federal and state regulatory requirements, examiner expectations, and emerging compliance topics; translate findings into clear, actionable

recommendations.

• Regulatory Updates: Monitor developments from NCUA, CFPB, FinCEN, FFIEC, NACHA, and other

applicable bodies; identify updates that apply to specific clients; and communicate them in a timely,

tailored manner.

• Client Q&A: Serve as a go-to resource for client compliance questions across a broad range of

topics, providing accurate, well-supported, and practical guidance in writing and on calls as needed.

• Compliance Training: Develop and deliver compliance training for client staff and boards, including live sessions, recorded materials, and written resources.

• Marketing Reviews: Review client marketing and advertising materials for compliance with

applicable regulatory requirements, including UDAAP, advertising rules, and consumer disclosure

requirements.

• Compliance-Related Audits: Perform compliance-related audits and reviews for clients,

documenting findings and providing clear, prioritized recommendations.

• Compliance Projects: Take on additional compliance-related projects as they arise, including

targeted policy work, risk assessments, remediation support, and other client deliverables.

• Documentation: Maintain clear, organized records of policy revisions, research findings, and client

guidance to ensure consistency and defensibility of advice provided.

Required Qualifications

• Extensive credit union compliance experience — significant, hands-on experience working in a

compliance role at a credit union or consulting to credit unions is required.

• Deep working knowledge of NCUA regulations, BSA/AML, fair lending, real estate lending,

ACH/NACHA rules, and consumer compliance regulations.

• Demonstrated ability to review and draft credit union policies with accuracy and precision.

• Strong regulatory research skills, including the ability to locate, interpret, and apply primary

regulatory sources and examiner guidance.

• Excellent executive-level writing skills — able to produce polished, board- and executive-ready

written work product and communicate complex compliance requirements clearly and concisely.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

• Ability to work independently in a fully remote environment and manage a flexible part-time

schedule.

Preferred Qualifications

• Compliance certifications such as CUCO.

• Prior experience supporting NCUA or state credit union examinations.

• Consulting experience serving multiple credit union clients simultaneously.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is:

• Deeply experienced — you have spent years in credit union compliance and can speak to the

practical realities of policies, exams, and day-to-day operations.

• Detail-oriented and precise — you catch issues others miss and take pride in accurate, well-cited

work.

• A strong writer — you can communicate complex regulatory analysis in clear, professional

language.

• A self-starter — you can pick up a policy or research question and move it forward independently.

• Efficient with time — you make the most of a part-time schedule and consistently deliver on

commitments.

Work Environment

This is a fully remote, full-time position. Quiet work environment, and strong internet connection is required.

Compensation

• Annual Salary $75k - $90k, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

• Fully remote work environment.

• Opportunity to focus on substantive compliance work without the demands of a full-time schedule.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should submit a resume and a brief cover letter describing their credit union

compliance experience to info@crimsonoakstrategies.com.
