Job description

Austin, TX

Western Union is seeking an Application Architect with 5+ years of experience designing, developing, and deploying scalable applications and microservices-based solutions. The ideal candidate has strong hands-on software engineering experience, a solid understanding of cloud-native architectures, and a passion for solving business challenges through technology. This role partners with engineering, product, and business teams to design effective solutions, improve application performance, and support the adoption of modern development practices, including AI-assisted software development tools.

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Western Union will not sponsor applicants for work visas for this position.

Role Responsibilities

  • Hands-on coding architect working with engineering and business partners to define and build out complex solutions driving value through business process simplification, automation and new product capabilities and AI-driven innovations
  • Demonstrate strong capabilities in assessing business needs while providing creative and effective solutions aligned with modern AI and data-driven technology standards
  • Product solutioning end-to-end new innovations, including embedding AI capabilities into core product workflows with iterative improvements
  • Support and contribute to developer productivity initiatives.
  • Strong emphasis on customer journey, product quality, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and continuous development
  • Apply established engineering best practices and leverage AI-assisted development tools.
  • Proven ability to improve developer productivity through AI-assisted coding practices, including code generation, automated unit test creation, and documentation synthesis.
  • Follow established security, compliance, and development standards.
  • Familiarity with integrating AI tools into developer workflows (IDEs, CI/CD pipelines, code review systems)
  • Proven ability to understand business and ability to contribute to technology direction that drives measurable business improvements
  • Awareness of emerging AI development tools and practices.

Role Requirements

  • BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field with 5+ years of professional experience, or MS with 3+ years of experience, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience developing enterprise applications using technologies using Java, Python, or similar object-oriented languages. Includes demonstrated experience delivering production software through the full software development lifecycle, including architecture, coding, testing, deployment, and support.
  • 3+ years of experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs and microservices-based architectures.
  • 3+ years of experience building and operating cloud-native applications at scale, preferably on AWS (Lambda, ECS, API Gateway, S3, DynamoDB, RDS, etc.).

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in fintech domains, including payments, risk management, compliance, fraud detection, banking, or financial services.
  • AWS Developer Associate, AWS Solutions Architect, or equivalent cloud certification.
  • Experience implementing AI-enabled products using LLMs, agentic workflows, vector databases, RAG architectures, or AI orchestration frameworks.
  • Experience driving developer productivity initiatives and AI-assisted software engineering practices at team or organizational scale.

Work Shift

HYBRID - Western Union values in-person collaboration, problem solving, and ideation whenever possible. We believe this fosters common ways of working and supports how we execute initiatives for our customers. The expectation is to work from the office a minimum of three days a week.

Salary

The base salary range is $125,000 - $150,000 per year; total on-target earnings include a base salary and short-term incentives that align with individual and company performance. Actual salaries will vary based on candidates' qualifications, skills, and competencies.
