What is a union data engineer?

Union Data Engineers are professionals who design, build, and maintain data systems and infrastructure, often within organizations that have unionized workforces. They are responsible for collecting, processing, and managing data to support decision-making and business operations. In unionized environments, these engineers may also play a role in ensuring that data practices comply with union agreements and labor regulations. Their work often involves collaborating with data scientists, analysts, and IT teams to ensure efficient and secure data flow. Union Data Engineers need strong technical skills in databases, programming, and data integration, along with an understanding of union guidelines relevant to their industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a union data engineer?

To thrive as a Union Data Engineer, you need strong programming skills in languages like SQL and Python, a solid understanding of data modeling, and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with data warehousing tools, ETL systems, and platforms such as Hadoop or Spark, as well as certifications like Google Cloud or AWS Data Engineering, are commonly required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help you collaborate effectively with stakeholders and team members. These skills ensure accurate data management, efficient workflow integration, and support data-driven decision-making crucial to organizational success.

What are some common challenges faced by union data engineers when working with legacy systems?

Union Data Engineers often encounter legacy systems that may lack proper documentation, have outdated technology stacks, or store data in non-standard formats. Navigating these challenges requires strong problem-solving skills, patience, and the ability to work collaboratively with IT and business teams to ensure data integrity and successful integration. Regular communication with stakeholders and a willingness to learn about older technologies are key to addressing these obstacles and delivering effective data solutions.

Data engineers are currently in high demand due to the increasing need for managing large data systems, building data pipelines, and supporting data analytics. Skills in cloud platforms, programming languages like Python or Scala, and familiarity with tools such as Hadoop or Spark enhance job prospects in this field.

Is a union data engineer a high paying job?

Union data engineers typically earn competitive salaries that can be higher than non-union roles due to negotiated wages and benefits. Compensation varies based on experience, location, and industry, but union positions often include additional job security and benefits that contribute to overall compensation packages.

Job description

Job Title: Senior Superintendent (Data Centers)
Location: 100% National Travel
Company: The Boldt Company
Anticipated Salary Range: $150,000 - $186,000 annually

At Boldt, we build more than complex projects, and we build strong relationships, great teams, and lasting impact.

We’re hiring a Senior Superintendent to lead field execution on large-scale data center construction projects. This is a key jobsite leadership role for someone who can coordinate craft and subcontractor activities, keep complex site work moving safely and efficiently, and build strong working partnerships with Project Managers and trade partners.
As a Senior Superintendent at Boldt, you’ll be the field leader driving day-to-day execution on large-scale data center work—building strong relationships, setting the pace for the site, and ensuring work is delivered safely, on schedule, and within budget. You’ll coordinate craft and subcontractor activity, serve as a key liaison with owners/architects/engineers for daily construction needs, and help create the kind of jobsite culture where teams communicate openly, roll up their sleeves, and win together.

In this role, you’ll own the field plan—staffing, logistics, schedules, productivity planning (BPS), site controls, and quality execution—while partnering tightly with the Project Manager to deliver shared success. We’re looking for someone with deep union experience, strong subcontractor coordination, and the ability to keep complex scopes (mechanical/heavy electrical/plumbing) aligned as conditions change. If you lead with safety, empower your crew, and take pride in doing the work right the first time, you’ll thrive at Boldt.

The anticipated salary range for this position is $150,000 - $186,000 annually. This information reflects the anticipated base salary for this position based on current market data. Minimums and maximums may vary based on location. Actual pay will be adjusted based on an individual’s skills, experiences, education, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
