What is a union cosmetologist?

A union cosmetologist is a licensed beauty professional who is a member of a labor union, typically working in environments like film, television, or theater productions. These professionals provide hair, makeup, and sometimes skincare services to actors and performers, ensuring that they meet the production's standards. Being in a union offers benefits such as collective bargaining for better wages, access to health and retirement benefits, and protection of working conditions. Union membership often requires meeting certain experience and training criteria, as well as paying dues. Union cosmetologists play a vital role in the entertainment industry, helping to create and maintain the desired looks for characters on screen or stage.

What are some unique aspects of working as a union cosmetologist compared to a non-union position?

As a union cosmetologist, you'll often benefit from standardized wages, scheduled breaks, and access to benefits such as healthcare and retirement plans that may not be available in non-union positions. You'll likely work alongside other union members, fostering a collaborative environment where workplace rights are protected and professional development is encouraged. However, you may need to adapt to specific union guidelines regarding scheduling, client assignments, and continuing education requirements. Unionized settings, such as those in film, theater, or television, can also offer unique networking and advancement opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Union Cosmetologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Union Cosmetologist, you need formal training in cosmetology, a state-issued cosmetology license, and up-to-date knowledge of hair, skin, and nail techniques. Familiarity with industry-standard tools, sanitation procedures, and scheduling or point-of-sale systems is often required. Strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and professionalism help build client trust and foster positive workplace relationships. These skills and qualifications ensure safe, high-quality services and support career advancement within unionized environments.

About Great Clips

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Great Clips, Inc. was established in Minneapolis, Minnesota by founders David Rubenzer and Steve Lemmon in 1982, a time when most people received haircuts in one of three ways: in full-service hair salons, from barbershops or at home. As a stylist and businessman, David could see that the industry was changing. Customers were looking for a hair salon service that could fit their busy lifestyles and desire for value. To be part of that change – rather than find themselves competing with it – David and Steve developed the then-radical concept of a walk-in haircare salon with weekend and evening hours, offering customers a select list of services, and providing benefits for stylists. After the founders opened several successful hair salons, Ray Barton joined David and Steve as an owner in March 1983. With Ray's help and expertise in franchising, the trio set about growing the Great Clips hair salon brand. That success continues through today.
