Physical Education Teacher - (One Year Appointment)
Period: 2026-2027

Founded in 1947, the United Nations International School (UNIS) is a Pre-K through Grade 12 independent school in Manhattan, serving a diverse, global community. Guided by the ideals of the United Nations, UNIS provides an inclusive learning environment where rigorous international programs foster academic excellence, creativity, innovation, and cross-cultural communication, inspiring students to help build a peaceful, compassionate, and sustainable world.
UNIS seeks an experienced Physical Education Teacher with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education or related and at least three years of experience with elementary, middle, and high school children. In addition, the following skills: ensure a positive environment, communicate effectively, and maintain accurate record keeping. The Physical Education Teacher is dedicated, student focused and committed to providing an interactive learning environment. The Physical Education Teacher collaborates with all members of the school community to meet the needs of students and promote the philosophy of school.
This position reports to the Director of Athletics and Physical Education.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Physical Education Teacher’s responsibilities include the following, but are not limited to:
  • Plan and instruct high-quality physical education classes for PreK-12 students emphasizing safety, fun, differentiation, knowledge, understanding, and skill development.
  • Evaluate and assess student learning and performance in physical education classes, maintaining records and writing report cards.
  • Utilizing learning management and student information systems such as Schoology and Seesaw.
  • Communicate effectively with students, faculty, and parents about student progress.
  • Collaborate and participate actively in the work of the Department on innovative curriculum design and program development.
  • Participate actively in the school community, which may include coaching an interscholastic athletics team or being involved in the After School Sports Program.
  • Maintain good professional and collaborative relationships with colleagues.
  • Commit to personal growth through active participation in professional development.

SKILLS amp; QUALIFICATIONS
  • Three years of relevant teaching experience, with a proven history across different age ranges
  • CPR, AED, and First Aid Certification
  • Concussion Training
  • A record of integrity and the ability to inspire students and athletes to perform at a high level
  • Strong leadership, motivational, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Commitment to social justice, diversity, equity, and anti-racist, anti-bias education
  • Computer literacy and technological proficiency
  • Effective classroom management skills
  • True passion for teaching
  • Demonstrate knowledge of content and pedagogy of different physical education curriculum areas, including a combination of team sports, individual/dual sports, strength, and conditioning, dance/gymnastics, and/or yoga.
  • Experience playing and/or coaching a team sport at the high school level; playing and/or coaching at the college level preferred.
  • Proficient in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive, Forms etc) for data tracking/entry and files management
  • Must pass a national background and fingerprinting check.
  • Passionate about Sports and Student learning.

EDUCATION amp; EXPERIENCE:
  • BA in Physical Education (Masters preferred)
  • Experience in a K-12 educational environment is essential
  • Experience with best practices in assessment and reporting preferred (e.g., Standard-Based Grading and Reporting)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time while instructing or demonstrating teaching techniques.
  • Capability to move around the classroom to provide individual support to students.
  • Comfort with lifting and handling art materials, supplies and student projects, occasionally requiring up to 15 lbs. of weight.
  • Dexterity and fine motor skills required for demonstrating teaching techniques and using tools and materials in the classroom.

COMPENSATION
Compensation is between $67,745 to $111,974 commensurate with years of experience as outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (salary is prorated for part-time or temporary positions).
