Job description
The Counselor, Underserved Populations Coordinator will function as a strong generalist conducting mental health assessments (intakes), urgent care (crisis) assessments, triage assessments and professional counseling services (including individual, couples, group) especially but not exclusively to students from populations who are less likely to access counseling services (underserved populations). Other responsibilities include referral, consultation, in-service training, and outreach, as well as crisis intervention services and public relations services to campus and community members as appropriate. Independent licensure is required for this position.
The Counselor, Underserved Populations Coordinator is under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of the Counseling & Testing Center (CTC) with a secondary supervisory relationship with the Vice Chancellor for Access, Belonging & Compliance (AB&C). Other responsibilities include developing and fostering relationships with departments that serve underserved populations, as well as belonging focused student organizations and groups; developing procedures withAB&Ccampus partners to better respond to student mental health needs; providing consultation, outreach, and training toAB&Coffices/staff. This position will have a primary office withinCTCand a secondary location within a partneredAB&Coffice. The Counselor will also participate in staff, student affairs, and university committees. Similar to all staff at theCTC, the successful candidate will work to makeUWLa welcoming and inclusive environment for all students, and they will do so in compliance with ethical, legal, and accreditation guidelines.
This is a 10-month, annual appointment. The successful candidate will be working full time for 10 months of the year (August 1 to May 31), and will be put on short work break for the months of June and July.
- Typical office hours (7:45am-4:30pm). Evening hours may be required as we expand our services (e.g., one evening/week), with a schedule adjustment made to maintain an average of 40 hours per week onsite. While no after-hours crisis coverage is required, our clinical staff members occasionally provide evening outreach programming and may be called in for a campus crisis response.
- Clinicians provide a combination of in-person and telehealth counseling services.

Key Job Responsibilities:5. University Services & Other Miscellaneous
Perform other duties and projects assigned by the assistant director.
Share responsibility for creating and maintaining an inclusive environment for all university students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Communicate with the director and assistant director regarding absences, program ideas, concerns, projects, etc.
3. Provision of Indirect Counseling Services
Develop and maintain campus relationships, especially with those departments and offices that serve underserved student populations.
Collaborate with the CTC Assistant Director and staff to identify and implement strategies and/or programs to improve access for underserved students.
Partner with the CTC Outreach Coordinator and campus constituents to aide in the coordination and participation of outreach functions (including preventions/education programs and services), specifically as they relate to awareness and education of underserved populations.
Coordinate and participate in in-service training for CTC staff and the campus community.
Develop and maintain community relationships within the treatment communities that focus on serving underserved populations.
Engage in and conduct applied research, needs assessment and evaluation of counseling and outreach services as they relate to underserved populations.
Perform other duties and projects assigned by the CTC Assistant Director and Vice Chancellor for AB&C.
1. Provision of Direct Counseling Services
Provide professional counseling services for UWL students, including individual, group, crisis, and occasional couples counseling with a priority of working with undeserved student populations.
Provide initial brief assessment (triage) and urgent care (crisis) coverage.
Select, administer, and interpret various psychological, educational, and/or vocational assessments and tests, as allowed by scope of practice and training.
Supervise, train, and/or provide consultation support to clinical staff working towards independent licensure.
Engage in timely collaboration and consultation with various university departments and offices to support and advocate for students.
Provide consultation to the UWL community, with a special focus on AB&C departments, and to the La Crosse community when feasible.
4. Professional Development
Contribute to CTC training/clinical staff seminars as presenter and consultant.
Participate in campus staff development training sessions.
Maintain and improve clinical competence through ongoing professional development activities and education.
Attend local, state, regional and national professional conferences and participate in continuing education workshops.
Maintain memberships in professional organizations.
Maintain appropriate licensure to practice in accordance with state statutes.
2. Administrative Activities and University Service
Maintain timely and accurate records of evaluation, treatment, consultation, and correspondence (case management).
Serve on staff, student affairs, and university committees as appropriate, including but not limited to activities that will positively impact and/or benefit underserved student groups.
Serve on campus and local task force groups as appropriate.
Participate in administrative staff meetings for both CTC and AB&C as appropriate.
Participate in joint quarterly meetings with CTC Assistant Director and Vice Chancellor for AB&C.
Participate in appropriate public relations for the university community.
Counseling & Testing Center (CTC)
Compensation:$48,211 / year
Required Qualifications:- Independently licensed in Wisconsin as aLPC,LCSW, orLMFT, or independently licensed in another state and eligible to apply for a WI license by reciprocity immediately upon hire.
- Experience with treating diagnostically and/or culturally diverse client populations.
- Five (5) or more years of experience as a licensed mental health professional (if licensed asLPC) or possesses the equivalent necessary to provide clinical supervision toward state licensure for counselors in training.
- Experience providing mental health treatment on a college campus and/or experience working in higher education with culturally and diagnostically diverse college students.
- Experience conducting brief therapy with emerging adults for a wide range of presenting concerns.
- Experience providing clinical supervision to trainees in a counseling setting.
- Experience conducting outreach programming, presentations, training, and/or workshops relevant to college students from underserved populations.
- Experience providing group counseling (psychoeducational/skills, support, and therapy groups).
- Experience with crisis intervention treatment.
- Ability to provide bi-lingual treatment (Spanish and/or Hmong language preferred).
- Ability to work autonomously and within interdisciplinary team settings.
- Experience with Electronic Health Records and computer applications used for telehealth services.
